I was at Forbidden Drive in Philadelphia yesterday (Friday) and to my surprise there were many Wood Ducks. I've never been so close to these - had a great time!

Ha - If someone put a wooden duck in the water I probably couldn't tell them apart. Thanks

Why are they called wood ducks instead of some exotic name like Mandarin? Hope someone will enlighten me.

The Asian Mandarin Duck is related, in that they are part of the same genus. However, I have no idea where the name comes from, other than a guess because they nest in the cavities of trees.

Thanks, Tim. Since we have Mandarin and Mallard, seems like they should have a name as pretty as they are.
