Terrific photos of a terrific series of birds...glad you can find a great variety like these to photograph and share with us, jak!!

jederick, I agree that I'm lucky to be able to find such a wide variety of birds to photograph and to be able to get close enough to most of them to snap shots worth sharing. Of course there are more that I can see but not get near enough to photograph effectively. I am happy to be able to share them and appreciate your taking the time to view and comment on them. Have a healthy, happy weekend. jak

Looks like an amazing vagrant season this year. Great captures.

Thanks very much, Curmudgeon. I've appreciated many of your photos and am happy that I can return some of the pleasure. So far it seems to be a very good season for migrants and vagrants. I've read with great concern about the unusually large number of bird deaths along the western side of the Rockies. Has this extended into Arizona? So far, it looks like the Pacific Flyway has not been experiencing a significant die off, and I've read that the food sources along the coast are plentiful. If we can just avoid further major brushfires that fill the sky with soot and chemicals, it should continue to be a good year. In the early Summer, the food sources for Least Terns seemed to be late. We have a project tracking the number of nesting Least Terns and Snowy Plovers at a nearby State Beach, and the numbers were down significantly. Moreover, lack of food and presence of predators caused many of the nests that were found to be abandoned early. I don't know how widespread this was. Take good care of yourself and have a productive, creative week. jak

The Fall migration is well under way. SoCal is being visited by an interesting variety of birds relocating for the winter season and stopping on their way to new habitats. Some of these aren't even visitors in normal years but "vagrants," passing through SoCal in small numbers and in locations where they have seldom been seen. Although I haven't been able to find all of the reported rare species, it's been fun finding a few and getting out to look for others. All photos were taken with a Nikon D500, handheld, using a Nikkor 200-500mm telezoom set on Auto-ISO. Shutter speeds have ranged between 1/1250 and 1/2500. Apertures have generally been f/6.3 to f/9.0. Most look better as downloads.

Thank you very much, merrytexan. It's a fun hobby...both the birding and the photography...I make it a single hobby I call "photo birding". I agree that shot No. 2 is my favorite...followed by the last photo of the Brewer's Sparrow. These small birds are usually very difficult to get a good photo of because they are always moving and tend to spend their time hopping from branch to branch deep inside grasses and bushes. Sometimes I get lucky, as in No. 2 and the last one. Thanks again and have a wonderful Sunday. Stay healthy. jak
