From what I'm reading, it looks like if you use a card bigger than 1GB, TIFF files will make everyone look like "Shrek", like your example you posted, but JPEG files are fine with bigger cards (but I'd stick with 2GB or smaller). TIFF files are not the same as raw files. I'm guessing here, but suspect this camera saves as 8 bit color and won't have the latitude to correct sucessfully.

I have the same camera and encountered the same exact problem when I used an SD card bigger than 1Gb. Checking the manual confirms that the biggest SD card supported is 1Gb.

Just how old of a camera is this you two have? I use now where near my limits. And use 16, 32, 64 GB cards in my cameras, and I know many people use 128 GBs.

No, a TIFF has been processed in the camera. A profile and camera menu settings have been used to process camera-produced TIFF images. Some people consider a 16-bit TIFF to be ALMOST as good as a JPEG, but editing a raw file, and a TIFF made from a raw, will reveal the limitations.

A raw file is digitized, unprocessed data, not a finished image. TIFF comes in around 50 flavors, but most of them contain some sort of bitmap and metadata (data about the bitmap array structure and the camera settings), plus a small JPEG preview image.

Bill,

Notice the comma in "...before, RAW, JPG, and DNG...". I guess I should have written two sentences. Wow, I've never known of a camera to shoot in TIFF before. But I have known of and own cameras that shoot in RAW, JPG, and DNG all the time. I said TIFFs were similar to, not identical to RAW as used by his camera. My point being I am totally unfamiliar with any digital cameras not shooting in at least one or two of RAW, DNG, or JPEG. I never heard of a TIFF shooter before. Of course a TIFF is different than a RAW. And camera produced JPGs and Ps produced JPGs seem to differ a bit as do camera (raw) DNGs and Ps or ACR produced DNGs. As well as JPGs. At least there are differences using my older versions of Ps CS6 and ACR 9.1.1. So just how old a camera is the one the OP owns? My first digital was from 1996. And it, my Kodak shot RAW and JPGs. Sadly, I never thought to shoot in RAW back then. Luckily my Ps skills have improved and I can work OK with my more correctly exposed image files.

This camera was purchased in 2006 and has served me well. I still use it for it's 12x optical zoom and 48x digital zoom.

But it took me a while to figure out that it's limited to a max 1Gb SD card. Heck, you can't even GET 1Gb SD cards anymore.

The first DSLR I ever used was a Fuji S1. Came with a whopping 1gig microdrive. A compact flash form factor with a spinning disc! It had three different batteries and shot tiff if I remember right.

Lami ,

The camera I have in my hand today is :
Panasonic lumix dcm FZ 20 (Matsushita el. ind. in Osaka fecit in 2004 ) . I bought it in 2004 and used a couple of year . After that I " lost " it in a drawer . Last week I opened that drawer and start to load very old dia in my imac 27 late 2009 . The operating instruction pag 16 says that max sd memory card should be 1gb . I did not notice this table and used 2gb that is good for jpg but not for tiff . Actually I don't need bigger sd ; I am happy with 1gb too . In my humble opinion , of course .
Best Angelo's regards

Got it. I read it wrong.

My ancient Nikon D100 saved in TIFF. Some early Pentax bodies save in TIFF, but later ones use DNG (better!). I never saw the point of saving TIFF at the camera... other than as a futile attempt at preserving bit depth that is better served by raw or DNG. That's probably why it never caught on...

TIFF is best used as an intermediate editing format, or for very high end printing applications on printers with extended color gamuts and dynamic range. JPEG was created to be a distribution format.
