I'm looking for an easy way to download photos from my camera's SD card to my computer so that I can edit them, put them in albums, etc. I've tried Google Photos, but it hasn't worked (or I haven't done it correctly) reliably. Your recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Extremely easy.
Open card in the reader.
Copy images from the card to a folder you made in your computer.
Done.

Check your computer for an SD card slot, something that is standard for most computers at 6-years or newer. Otherwise, look online for a USB plug-in card reader to one of your computer's USB slots.

Your question is getting images from the camera to the computer, but I think you are really asking where to put them on the computer and what programs to use for editing and organizing them.

My personal preference is to turn off the camera, take out the card, put it in my card reader and then use my softwares import feature. From there I can organize, rate, tag, edit and do what I want with them.

There are a lot of options out there. I use the Adobe tools. Lightroom CC Classic is my go to. There are a lot of free Youtube videos out there on it.

Try searching for "import and edit pictures", most of those tutorials will take you through the whole process. Look at some different software options and see what you think you like.

I have been using digital cameras for the past 25 years and I will never take the memory card out of my cameras, I have been using the usb cable attached to my computer permanently and the only next step is to connect it to the camera when I need to upload photos. I know there are many that disagree with me in the past but I don’t want to damage the card by taking in and out the camera. Every one has a way to do that process at their own.

That's what I do. It just seems easier to connect a cable to the camera than to take the card out and put it in a card reader.
