Excellent images. Many years ago my dad hunted raccoons during the winter hunting season to sell the hides. That money would be used for Christmas presents for we kids. Before baking the meat in the oven with barbecue sauce on it my mother would soak it in a vinegar solution to remove the gamey taste. The only reason I don't have any bird feeders is because they attract the undesirables. Some years ago in the house next to mine the fireplace had been covered over with wallboard. After the house was sold and remodeling started the owner and his helpers, all grown men, were freaking out when they discovered a dead mother raccoon and two babies in the fireplace. I was asked and agreed to remove them.

The only undesirable encounter I had with a raccoon was when I lived in an old house that had what seemed to be a potting shed added between two of roof peaks. It was accessed through a door in the attic bedroom and it had a window opening but with no actual window in it. I used to open the bedroom door when it was hot at night. One such night I heard a bunch of scrambling and thought my cat had got into trouble. So, without turning on the light, I looked out the opening and saw an animal clinging to the house wall. In my sleepy state I reached out to grab it, thinking that the cat had fallen out. Just in time, I realized I was looking at a raccoon. I quickly retreated and closed the door. After that, I installed a screen door on the bedroom.

This youngster visited the back yard yesterday evening and polished off the bird's sunflower seed feast - every last bit. I got very close to him but he couldn't have cared less. No sign of mom and his siblings who have been seen together.

So cute ....they are so much fun to watch....Little Bandits.

I’m a city kid but on my country visits I was always told to avoid raccoons especially after daylight. The post says “last evening”, a broad time span, so what’s the scoop?

I live in the city but raccoons live here too (as do foxes, squirrels, hawks and even coyotes). We have ravines and big parks where they can live, although many find places to sleep withing the city. I see raccoons out back in the early evening - anytime from around 6pm on. Sometimes they even come out in the daytime. They have become citified. They don't come up to be petted but they're not really afraid of humans. Obviously you don't want to corner them and make them angry. The one in my photos is very young and clearly hasn't learned to fear people. As I said, it let me get close while it was on the bird feeder. Usually raccoons this small are still with their mothers. Not sure where she was. He returned for a second visit yesterday but he stayed on the ground.
