This youngster visited the back yard yesterday evening and polished off the bird's sunflower seed feast - every last bit. I got very close to him but he couldn't have cared less. No sign of mom and his siblings who have been seen together.

Yes, they are cute from a distance--I have known city people who put out food for them, but in time they began tearing up his roof and nesting in the attic. Beware--they can tear a pit bull to pieces if they set out to, so keep pets away. They have amazing abilities to reach bird feeders, even those hanging from hard to reach places.

It is illegal in many places to trap them and take them to the woods--and they will come back anyway unless it is over 5 miles away with food and water around. Strangely, while deporting them that way is illegal in KY, it is perfectly legal to shoot them except in cities, and here they are considered good eating (the #3 game here). It is also legal to trap them for the fur, but the market for that has finally withered up. The only time I ever ate game was in a German restaurant near Times Square in NYC, 50 years ago--I think it was called The Blue Ribbon. They had saddle of hare and venison on the menu, but no raccoon.

They are cute but don't encourage them to stay around. They can be really nasty pests. Nice images, though.

Excellent images. Many years ago my dad hunted raccoons during the winter hunting season to sell the hides. That money would be used for Christmas presents for we kids. Before baking the meat in the oven with barbecue sauce on it my mother would soak it in a vinegar solution to remove the gamey taste. The only reason I don't have any bird feeders is because they attract the undesirables. Some years ago in the house next to mine the fireplace had been covered over with wallboard. After the house was sold and remodeling started the owner and his helpers, all grown men, were freaking out when they discovered a dead mother raccoon and two babies in the fireplace. I was asked and agreed to remove them.
