Thistle is the common name of a group of flowering plants characterized by leaves with sharp prickles on the margins, mostly in the family
Asteraceae. A thistle is the floral emblem of Scotland, and according to legend, the sharp prickles caused invading Norsemen to cry out in pain, alerting the defending Scots of a sneak attack, possibly in the actual Battle of Largs in 1263.

Alcea) are native to Asia and Europe. Only a single hollyhock species is native to the Americas.
