Thank you PixelStan77, Jack, Blair, Jim, Susan, Earnest, mffox, Doc! The flowers are so much easier for tracking with the manual focus lenses than moving bugs, something I tried again yesterday. Glad you enjoyed and thank you for your kind comments.

Thistle is the common name of a group of flowering plants characterized by leaves with sharp prickles on the margins, mostly in the family Asteraceae. A thistle is the floral emblem of Scotland, and according to legend, the sharp prickles caused invading Norsemen to cry out in pain, alerting the defending Scots of a sneak attack, possibly in the actual Battle of Largs in 1263.

In the wild, Heliopsis helianthoides (False Sunflower or Tuscan Gold) may be found in wooded areas and tallgrass prairie, and sometimes along roadsides.

Hollyhocks (Alcea) are native to Asia and Europe. Only a single hollyhock species is native to the Americas.

Star tickseed is a North American wildflower related to the sunflower. The flower is native to the southeastern US. These in Chicago are probably escapes from cultivation.

These images combine Sony and Canon full-frame bodies with all Canon lenses. All the specific details are available from the Flickr host pages via the image titles that are click-able URL links.

Thank you Vince, Jeff, Ballard! With no airshows this summer, I've been practicing with the local flowers. Glad you liked the results.

Thank you MT! I've been photographing the hollyhocks for a few years with this year's planning and results coming out the best so far.

Thank you Timothy! The City of Chicago has 21-miles of continuous parkland along Lake Michigan. About 10-years ago they started fencing off sections to allow to return to natural Illinois prairie, with wild grasses and wild flowers. A good sized section is about a mile walk from my place going north and I discovered another section this Spring walking south in the opposite direction.

Thanx for the info. Only been to Chicago twice for short periods of time. We all benefit from green spaces and wild areas.
