And if labor costs (and corporate taxes) stateside are prohibitive (meaning the consumers won't pay that price for a finished product), then they have no alternative but to outsource overseas. It all still boils down to the American consumer and what they will pay. Look at the camera industry. The Mom and Pop shops have disappeared. Consumers would go in, handle a camera or lens and then go buy it cheaper online.... Same goes for all other goods. It's not the corporation or the shareholders, it's the American public...
And if labor costs (and corporate taxes) stateside... (show quote)

Finally someone stated the obvious t***h.

Sorry, Screaming Scott, but the original post asked why we were not producing the necessary protective gear. The two people I cited tried to blame prior administrations without citing any examples or evidence to support their calumnies. I was just correcting the record with facts. If facts demonstrate bias, then I am biased in favor of facts over polemics.

The Title says nothing about PPE "Why Can't the USA Manufacture?". They just used PPE as an example...Funny though, it seems PPE gear is in short supply worldwide and as such no matter who was to be in office this shortage would still be present...

Conservatives Trying to maximize their profit going after the cheapest labor and lowest processing costs. It's ALL about the money. You answer makes no sense.

You need an education. The issue is largely non-political. Corporations as part of their responsibility to owners and/or shareholders want to maximize their profit. Indeed Apple who in not at all led by a conservative is guilty of exporting many jobs to China. This is true of the tech industry in general. Our politicians have been selling out the USA for decades. Democrats have been particularly guilty of this but Republicans have not been forceful opponents either.

US corporations owe a bit of loyalty to the USA but more importantly the loyalty of politicians is required.

It is certainly time to take back the USA from the Chicoms

It amazes me how somebody as willfully ignorant and with the extreme fundamentalist ideology you display

Instead of proclaiming so loudly that you don’t agree, perhaps you can make a rebuttal on why you don’t believe?

T***h and fact only please.

OK, anybody that use words like l*****t as the reason for ..? is, to me, an ignorant ideolog.
The US no longer, assuming it ever did, knows the meaning of govern. It is about power and control, with the GOP being more enthusiastic about it than the Dems.

That last sentence is a matter of opinion.

I can't agree with your assessment. If the will and leadership is there we can do it.

According to Wikipedia, in late 1940 the U.S. government started an "Emergency Shipbuilding Program....to quickly build simple cargo ships to carry troops and materiel to allies and foreign theatres during World War II.... the program built almost 6,000 ships." The average time to build one of these "Liberty" ships eventually dropped to 42 days! And yes, the Liberty ships had their design flaws. A fantastic achievement nonetheless in light of all the problems at the time: materiel and manpower shortages, training needs to use new technologies, etc. Attached is a photo from Wikipedia showing a Liberty ship on Day 24, ready for launching....

Given this impressive manufacturing capability (along with many others) that we demonstrated during World War II, can someone please explain to me why we can't expand the PPE manufacturing base to supply what we need in our war against c****av***s? I'm proud of our past achievements in the face of adversity. I'm not proud of the way we're handling the current crisis.....

You’re comparing 1940 to 2020? That’s 80 years ago and lots of manufacturing plants closed down or sent their machinery overseas. We have long since t***sitioned from a manufacturing to a service economy.

I worked in the textile industry all of my life as an executive. It was the Republican controlled congress that v**ed in favor of the Africa bill. It destroyed our industry in one swift move. The results were that every Chinese opened a factory in Madagascar and Mauritius to manufacture and import duty free into our country. I am a non Trump conservative but I do not buy all this supposedly BS about liberal industrial give away.
