Brent,
East coast wave, post Hurricane Sandy, not as big as your Wedge waves, yet very difficult to get out.Took this with a superzoom from 1000- yards. starting to pixelate.

Where was the hurricane centered? I forget, is Newport Beach facing the South or the South West?
I never Surfed, but I spent many years Diving around So. Cal. Although the only place in Orange County, that I can remember that I dove was Laguna Beach. Loved Laguna, not so much for Diving but for Bicycling & the restaurants & night life.

To my knowledge there is no hurricane. When the Wedge breaks biggest and best the swell comes in from the North West. The waves bank off the rock jetty and snap up another 10'. (see photo #2)
In Laguna Beach there is a good diving area called "Diver's Cove". It's about the best visibility. Most all the other areas in So Cal have to much sand being stirred up by the waves and there is poor visibility.

The waves are huge, and I think you mentioned they were bigger the prior day? not for amateurs.

No......many people have died and or been paralized there at the Wedge. It breaks on very shallow water and you really need to know what you are doing before you get in the water there.

On July 6th I visited the BIG waves at the famous "Wedge" in Newport Beach, California with my camera. The previous weekend it was even BIGGER but because of the virus thing the city had all the beaches shut down with a $1000 fine if you were caught on the beach.
These all look best in download mode.

All fantastic shots, as usual, Brent.
I love them all and they all display your photographic skill very well. I particularly like number eight but am really surprised he is not wearing a leg rope. Mandatory in Australia to prevent boards running uncontrolled and injuring other surfers.

Thanks again Mike. The waves are incredible and the guts or courage of the surfers out there is out of bounds! I wouldn't be out there in those crusher waves.

Thanks infocus for the compliments on the photos once again. The "leg ropes" are called "leashes" like a dog leash but it's a surfboard leash. These Wedge waves are so intense and break so close to the shore that most surfers don't even wear one. In this particular spot it's safer to not wear one because it's just another thing that can go wrong and the surfer wants to be as far away from the board as possible. The waves break so close to the beach there is little chance of a surfer being hit by someone else's board. I know that sounds a little crazy but this is a very unusual break and the surfers are actually better off not wearing a leash. Most all other surfing beaches the surfers do wear leashes but it's a combination of two reasons: 1. safety for the surfer inside (like you pointed out) and 2. so if the surfer looses his board, he doesn't have to swim to the beach to retrieve the board.

Thanks for the explanation Brent. We must have a similar break somewhere here but not being a surfer I wouldn't know. They are actually called leg ropes here not leashes - but there is always a USA name and an Aussie name for everything (Hahaha ) Like Ketchup Vs Tomato Sauce, Wind Shield Vs Wind Screen, Mom Vs Mum. It's what's makes it fun. Love your work Mate.
