Olympus question

Only you can truly answer the question. I switched from Canon to Olympus last year because of weight and size. What I found was that the EM1MII is a remarkable camera. It simply includes features that aren't available elsewhere. I can be happy with this camera for many years to come. If Olympus goes totally out of business and I needed a new body I would simply buy a used EM1MIII. The weight saving comes from the lenses more than the body and the IBIS is spectacular. Eventually other manufacturers will include some of what the Olympus offers today. However, I am using them today and do not need more. It is my understanding that Olympus is more still image oriented and Panasonic more video. Overall the m4/3 is a great susytem with exceptional lenses, even the non pro lenses.

To discuss what the company buying Olympus (Japan Industrial Partners) is or is not going to do is pointless. The agreement will be signed in September and the transfer will take place in December. Both companies have promised to discuss with consumers the terms of the agreement and future plans. Olympus already announced that operations in their camera division will continue on and that new models will be introduced this year.

A good thing is that my Olympus cameras are working today like they did last week and like they will work a few years from now if I am still around. Olympus has a wide world reputation and followers and I do not believe the new company is going to throw that over the board. I know that Fuji and Sony are interested in some of the Olympus technologies but that will happen only if the JIP company decides to sell some or all of the technology from Olympus. Too early to discuss that. Too early also to discuss what the plans are since that needs both companies to come to a final agreement and that will be in September.

I am confident that my cameras and lenses will last longer than I will and I am confident that if I need repairs in the near future there will be an ample supply of parts and a good number of technician to work with Olympus gear.
If I had to buy a new Olympus camera I would not hesitate a second in doing so.

I was in the process of gathering much of my Sony equipment together as a trade for an Olympus system. My main consideration is to reduce the weight and bulk. As I get older, this makes a difference. Now that Olympus sold off the camera division, I am wondering if this is such a wise move. I would appreciate hearing others opinion.

I did that very thing this morning - and for the same reason. What does it matter if the cameras division is sold to JIP at the end of the year? Warranties will be honoured, brand new cameras and lenses are available right now and there is a good secondhand market. According to Olympus UK a good deal of nensense is being bandied about by YouTubers who don't even own Olympus gear. I already own an EM1X and once the cash for my Sony gear is in the bank, I will order an EM1 mark III. I purchased a PL 100 - 400mm for my EM1X this morning, as the sale of the camera division holds no fear for me.

Basically, Olympus lens work well on Panasonic bodies as well. So, down the road you can always port over to Panasonic and if need be, still be able to use your Olympus lens. I shoot with a Panasonic G9 and love it. I use the Olympus 60/2.8 macro lens with it all the time without a hitch.

Buy used. Idiots are dumping Olympus gear like crazy! Check the used offering at B&H compared to Panasonic...

Let someone else eat the depreciation. Their panic is in your favor!

Thank you. That was great logic. I love to hike into the back country of Utah and Arizona, but the Sony gear is just too heavy for me now.

Explore Sony crop cameras. The bodies are small and they do have light lenses. You will get better images & perhaps save $$$.

Olympus is great equipment and will remain so. I have owned over 10 of their digital cameras and lens over the years. I would not expect a company to spend millions for a company just to turn around and shut it down . . .makes to sense to me. Olympus is here to stay. Very capable equipment.

JIP bought Sony Viao computers in 2014. Viao computers made by JIP are still available for sale. I expect that Olympus cameras will continue to improve in the future. Olympus cameras are very good.

Vaio = garbage now. They were okay when Sony made them/sold them.

Amateur Photography Magazine seem to think that JIP will continue the Olympus Mark. JIP rely on great management, so changes will probably need to happen. Panasonic would be a worthy alternative.

"Olympus makes good stuff. It should last a long time."

I agree! I had an OM-1 and OM-2 that I took on a 3-month trip around the world in 1976. They still work great, and have never had a problem.

It's quality equipment and build quality is second to none. In-camera features are amazing. You would be happy for several years. No one knows how it will turn out. Hopefully, JIP takes on most or all of Olympus' talented developers of cameras and lenses and will invest and enhance the business model. These things can go either way and at this time no one knows. So in the end, it is your choice.

I checked their website and Amazon. Customers seem to like them as much as a lot of similar laptops.
I have had a number of laptops from various manufacturers none were garbage and gave good service.

As I recall you are a Mac man. That is OK with me but Mac's are not useful to me.

If JIP purchased camera division for a bargain basement price with intent to sell off technology and make $$ then it's hard to believe Olympus didn't do that first without the transaction cost.
If JIP plans to have a camera division, then all is well.
Logic makes me believe that JIP plans for Olympus to be an ongoing business, only thing that makes sense to me. Sure there will be change.
Yes, I have Olympus equipment.

My immediate reaction to the Olympus acquisition is that the acquirer would have little reason to cease production, as it is an investment capital firm. Much more likely would be "streamlining" of management expenses and of the product line. Olympus has several innovative lenses near to introduction, and I'm eagerly awaiting the 150-400 f4.5 super zoom that employs the advantages of Pro Capture and dual IS capabilities, etc. I'd be really surprised if the acquirer bought the firm to tear it down.
