If you think Olympus is the only camera maker in financial trouble, take a look at Nikon

Canon isn't out of the woods, either.

Sony's doing a little better, but only a little:

and they are taking big losses on their mobile products, so. . .

I think the doomsayers are tripping over their own feet in announcing that this JIP move is the death knell of Olympus. If it is, they took a pretty crooked path towards bankruptcy, IMHO, by trying to restructure its losses and regain its sales by PARTNERING with a private investment company (read the Memorandum carefully).

I'm willing to wait and see, and in the meantime I have 2 Oly lenses on order. I am so tired of these kinds of threads, so this is the last one I am going to read. . .best wishes to all who have invested in Oly equipment or are thinking about it. I'm going to take some pictures now!!!

A well written logical reply backed by data. That is all too rare here. Thanks Susan. I have been shooting M43 since circa 2008 and I love the format. Indeed I was about to purchase the Olympus 14-150mm lens, I think it may make a good walking around lens to use in place of the 14-45 that I use now. I stopped the order when the announcement came out AND my OM-D developed a quirk. I will see how difficult it is to get the quirk repaired.

Today Olympus announced some new products. So ... maybe they are not going extinct? Or perhaps they want to clear out the inventory before closing shop? Time will tell.

Just bought used OMD EMI mkll for $700. Unbelievable value on a body/sys that will long outlast anything I could ask of it. Not an Oly newb; have EMI and Pen F.

You did well. Fantastic camera at a give away price.

I was in the process of gathering much of my Sony equipment together as a trade for an Olympus system. My main consideration is to reduce the weight and bulk. As I get older, this makes a difference. Now that Olympus sold off the camera division, I am wondering if this is such a wise move. I would appreciate hearing others opinion.

It depends. There was a long discussion on this issue in yesterday's forum. There is no indication at this time what direction the new owners of the Olympus photography line will take. They could continue it with new innovations and products. They could cheapen the product to increase the profitability and ride it until it dies out. Or, they could just take the technology and do something else with it. At worst, they could just take the assets and sell it off to the highest bidder. All of these scenarios have been played out in the corporate world over and over.

Items you have now or used equipment should be available for years. However, new equipment could be a risk as new releases, software fixes etc may be delayed or non-existent.

As someone else mentioned, if you enjoy the M4/3 format, then Pansonic and its Lumix line may be the way to go.

I would not be too concerned with buying Olympus, especially since all their lens will fit and work with Panasonic if need be.

I like Olympus a lot even though I don't own any OM-Ds right now. I do have some of the film cameras still - OM-2n, 2S, 4T but haven't use them in a while. My main concern is not availability of equipment used and new as there will plenty of stock for some time. I would worry about support...will there be firmware upgrades and repairs, and for how long? Will JIP support the equipment down the road. There is a lot of uncertainty at least until the transition is complete later in the year. Other than that the equipment will work fine for many years - I mean even today people still buy used cameras that have long been discontinued. I would not hesitate to buy Olympus and if the prices get too attractive I might jump in! There will always be a wide choice of lenses even with ZUIKO digital, and with adapters the universe of lenses will be limitless although with no AF.

Olympus makes good stuff. It should last you for a long time. Plus, this move by Olympus should make it easier to find good bargains on their used equipment.

Their decision is a sad note. I am a 'dyed-in-the-wool' Nikon man, but I have some Olympus equipment and I like it. My summation of the situation is this. Every camera manufacturer is in a bind and the proliferation of cell phones is the reason. Everyone wants to take pictures, but not everyone wants to be a photographer. Now, taking pictures with a cell phone is technically photography by the strictest definition of the term. I am definitely old school and a photographer, to me, is one who loves the craft, wants to know how it works and why it works, can get a good shot regardless of whether he is using a Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Fujifilm, or whatever piece of equipment he prefers, is willing to open books and study to learn how to do it, and he can get repeatable results.

But,enough of my sermonizing, I don't see how you could go wrong buying Olympus gear.

Wonderful to hear the Old School (that's when school was school) theme. I learned photography that way, and all the apps on my i-phone can't make it act like a camera--which is natural--but makes it hard for me to produce anything viewable with it.
BUTTTTT, it works for recording model and Serial numbers on appliances in need of parts.
