So far no one has offered an explanation of why I get good, mediocre and poor performance from Nikon branded batteries (EN-EL 14). Even with a magnifying glass I can detect no differences among them (12 at this point). The weights vary by about 100 gr.

The weight of the batteries should all be the same - are you sure that some of them aren't EN-EL14a batteries.
If batteries of the same model are of different weights you might have some counterfeits.

Is it worth paying the premium for the Nikon one's, in peoples experience?

Yes, you get what you pay for! Do you put inferior parts in your car?

Have some Panasonic knockoffs that work, but do not hold a charge as long. Have not had heavy use so don’t know how long hey will last. Next time I travel extensively (God knows when that will happen! ) I’ll probably buy the real thing again.

There are not that many places that manufacture Li-ion batteries. I bought 2 from Neewer for my D850s and there is not a perceivable difference in charging time, duration, or number of exposure from the 2 OEM batteries.

I have found typically the 3rd party batteries are best left alone in my scenario with exception of one. The company is Hahnel. I place 3 remote D-500s where a long battery life is critical. Hahnel (Ireland), come with their own charger, 2 batteries at once with a bar graph to show existing charge on batteries. In tests that I have done 2 D-500 side by side one with the El-15B series against the Hahnel, the Hahnel outlasted the OEM and still had about 15% life left.

I had two Nikon brand batteries for my D7100, though I seem to have misplaced one of them. I bought a few Vivitar brand batteries, which were about a third to half the cost of the Nikon and, so far, seem to work just fine.

Main difference is that the Nikon batteries are 1900 mAh, while the Vivitar are 2500 mAh, which means that they will last longer in between charging cycles.

I think you should find a buy the cheapest batteries you can find to go with all the expensive equipment you have. I also believe in having a great expensive printer and buy cheep ink and junk paper to show you work.
I have pride in my work and want no problems with my equipment. Some people use junk and get way with it for years and others have problems, I don't want unnecessary problems.
If I'm out for a few hours or several weeks I don't need extra potential non reliability.
Go out and have fun.

I have two Nikon batteries and two off brand batteries. I'm happy but likely 3 Nikons would make me happier. heh my first response, tell me if it has any value to anyone,

For me it’s simple really, the last thing I want on a shoot is a battery failure. Between the set, assistants, gofers, assorted union trades, MUA, rentals equipment and the client’s time - it’s a multi-thousand dollar investment. One I show to with two sets of equipment - a primary and backup of everything and half a dozen storage cards. So that’s even more expense. I don’t want some 3rd party battery to ruin everything.

My opinion based on my situation.

I have used Wasabi and Watson batteries in numerous cameras for the last 10 years or so with no problems. They usually have a slightly greater capacity than the OEM batteries but I never checked to see you many more shots this resulted in. The only battery that went bad and started to swell was a Canon OEM.

Some camera manufacturers put a chip in their OEM batteries so that their chargers will only work with their OEM batteries. In the case, you need to buy a third party charger.

Have had Nikon and Wasabi EN EL 15 for the D7200 for several years, and EN EL 14 for the last five. No perceptible difference except price. Just bought two more of the Wasabi 15 because my D810 uses them as well. Haven't had a failure or issue, and the Wasabi charger is smaller and lighter than the Nikon.

Had the same good experience with Wasabi. However, I always carry 2 spare batteries and rotate them when low.

Are you sure they were genuine Nikon batteries? Recently, B&H had to recall "Nikon" batteries that were counterfeit.

I have used Duracell batteries as a backup in my D7200, but they wouldn’t work in my D500 when I changed camera. Had a bad experience using cheaper batteries in an Olympus on holiday which ended up with us spending a lot of time sourcing a genuine Olympus batteries. I feel just got a D850 and no way am I going to try third party batteries in that. When it comes to batteries I would say got for originals every time
