Hi, Bonnie. Actually, I'm a huge PhotoShop fan. Have been ever since it came out. What I don't like are the "cooked" photos done in HDR. For the most part they're unrealistic, and would be more suited in artistic venues. I use PhotoShop extensively for restoring old/damaged photos for a historical society.

I'm jumping on your bandwagon on the HDR issue, crudasill. I want my photographs to look as natural and realistic as possible, as close to what the eye sees naturally with its own 20/20, so-to-speak. I make every attempt when pressing the shutter button to get everything ahead of time, including composition, as close to perfect as I'm capable of doing--thereby leaving as little as possible for PhotoShop to correct.

They're HDR. Processed to look surreal.

More than half of them are HDR processed. This would make me feel inadequate as I am HDR-challenged, but I mostly also don't like it. I am clearly in the minority on this issue, so what it ultimately means is I'm just not going to win any contests if that's what judges want. That's okay. I'm not terribly competitive about my photography. I like it when people enjoy it, but I don't need official recognition.

Most HDR looks phony to me. I am told it's possible to use it without it looking so fake. I am sure I'd like it better if it wasn't so obvious and probably best if I could look at a picture and see a picture ... not "ah, HDR." I actually LIKE soft colors and textures, but it's not fashionable. I hope it will come back into style. I miss it.

Anyway, I figure HDR iis fine if it's what you want. As for me, I live here on Earth, so I'll think I'll stick with pictures that look like like home.

My thoughts are it may not be quite appropriate for a photo contest. It may distort the natural beauty of the picture or hide it's flaws. I'm just guessing...because I don't know a thing about it! Another subject I'll have to learn. hehehe

I agree with you completely..I am not a huge photoshop fan. Just thought I'd let you know..you are not the only one with this way of thinking![/quote]

I know it's all subjective, but I'd like to see more "city/neighborhood" images like the theme says. I can't wait to get out and this soon! Of course this is just me ;)

OK, not to start any trouble or anything, but all I can think of is:
How did you all feel when the change happened from film to digital??
Honestly I was in college then for film and we all hated it. I had to re-think it as a separate art form... Then I was OK. We just need to understand art covers a lot of ground and each IS different than the other....... But all is worthy.....
Let's just enjoy the ride............. and look at each others art and appreciate it for what it is!

Hey guys, please refine from making and editing changes to other's work here in this post. It's going to make it even more difficult to pick the "winner"

Keep on posting!

Right . . . we're in contest mode here.

Also, if I may ride your coattails MWAC . . . when responding to someone, quote them (even if you edit it just so we know how to follow along) so we can follow the conversation (not just in this thread). Thanks for listening.

Only because I see the conversation spread out over several pages I'd like to chime in on the HDR thing in the "photo" contest. I think a photo should be only processed so it still resembles a photo (maybe a levels or saturation adjustment or something that doesn't detract from the intent). My 2 cents worth . . . and we know what that's worth nowadays.

That's a good topic, Jeanhdl, for a new topic string (How did you all feel when the change happened from film to digital?) Problem is, how many people do you think will admit to remembering how it was way back in the film days? That was WAY back in the last century.

Welcome to Ugly Hedgehog's very first Photography Contest. This will be a community run Bi-Monthly contest, open to all members of Ugly Hedgehog.

The rules will be relatively simple.
1. Entry to have been taken in the last month unless otherwise specified by the contest host (please do not go thru your achieves).
2. Theme will be picked by the Contest Host.
3. Contest will run for 2 weeks, after which the Contest Host will pick the winner.
4. You may enter up to 3 photos per contest.
5. The entry must be your own work.
6. Entries to be uploaded directly by entrants to the Contest Thread.
7. Contest Host will be determined by the previous Contest.
8. New rules may be added as the Bi-Monthly Contest grows and morphs.

I do hope that the Contest Hosts will provide feedback as to why they picked the entry that they did, but please remember this is for fun. I have volunteered to manage the contest overall, that does not mean I will judge entries (unless I am the Contest Host that week), or sway judging.

So with that, here is the first challenge:
Theme: Your City/Neighborhood
Due: October 30, 2011
Winner will be selected by: November 4th

Please post your entries in this thread for consideration.
Good Luck and get there and shot something!
