Watched it last night. Very interesting historical fact show including insight on his inability to cope outside of the military. When bored he drank. He was however an honorable man always trying to keep his family protected and fed.

He died of throat cancer brought on by his love of cigars. He spent his last months finishing his memoirs so that his wife would have a source of income after he died.

I known about throat cancer it kill my father. When Grant was at Chattanooga, Did he order troops not to take Lookout Mountain? But the troops did it anyway, if that is true it was left out of the Part II. When was the Battle of Cold Habor? Why I ask that at that battle Lee kick Grant's ass big time. Grant loss something like 7,000 troops in 20 mins. He order a second charge, but his field commanders say no way.

Well, knock me over with a feather and call me Shirley! Rather than its common line-up of drek programming like Ancient Aliens and The Curse of Oak Island, the cable network known as The History Channel is doing some solid history for a change! The other day it began a 3-part miniseries on Ulysses S. Grant; one of my favorite American heroes. Here is a preview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=lhzBYakZZW0&feature=emb_title . I watched part one the other day and thought it excellent. It should replay regularly if you missed it, or you can later find the series thru your cable television streaming service or thru other streaming services soon.
A good thing to watch!

I've watched the first 2. Very well done.

I, also, hate all those commercial we have to endure to watch a program but then I realize it's those commercials that pay for those programs. It used to be a regular one-hour show would have about 50 minutes of program with commercial breaks ever 15 minutes whereas now the programs run about 40 minutes with two commercial breaks in 15 minutes. If the advertisers think they are wasting their money sponsoring a program like Ulysses S. Grant they may think twice about doing it. Of course, there are pay-to-view channels that don't have commercials, i.e., HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, etc. Maybe that's the way we should go.

In case you missed the first two, I looked it up and you can view all three episodes tonight. I will DVR them and watch at my leisure instead of doing the marathon thingy. Besides I can flash forward through all of those commercials.

I been watching the whole series, it is excellent! I read Ron Chernow's biography of Grant and so far the series follows the book closely. I know the troops on their own took Lookout Mountain at Chattanooga but I can't be sure if it was stated they took it with out being ordered to, or they took it despite being ordered not to. But either way because of their enthusiasm in winning the first part of the battle the troops continued and took Lookout Mountain much to Grants pleasure.

You want to pay for me to have HBO, Cinemax, Showtime? If not, don't say: "Maybe that's the way we should go."

I read somewhere that 1) most of the series is taken from Ron Chernow's bio which was superb and although a door stop was a quick read as was the case with his bios of Hamilton and Washington....he's also one of the talking heads in this series 2) Leonardo DeCaprio had a hand in the production and / or direction of the series.

I, too, watched Part 1 last night (recorded from the night before) and thought it was very good. Looking forward to the other two parts.

Wonderful narrative of an American icon that is rarely recognized for his accomplishments.

Too many commercials, do they think we won't DVR and fast forward?
