What could be causing this?

I was out shooting some macro today, Canon 100mm f2.8L and a 6D Mark ll. After about 8 shots it quit working. No focus and the shutter button would not release. Put the lens on a 90D and it did not work there either. Today is not the first time this has happened. Some days it works just fine all day. I have had the same problem with a 7D Mark ll and a Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro. Any ideas? The 90D, 6D Mark ll, and the Canon 100mm macro lens are almost new. Using a very old Sandisc 16 card. Taking off the macro and the cameras perform perfectly.

First thing is to clean the contacts on the lens. Then, if that doesn't help, make sure the lens is firmly mounted to the camera. Make sure it locks in snugly when you mount it.

Potential issues:

Dirty contacts on body or lens

Lens not completely mounted (locked into position with a click)

Corrupt firmware (download and install the latest)

Menu settings incorrectly set for the situation

Circuit or mechanical failure in body or lens

Is there any chance you were inside the minimum focus distance of the lens?
Easy for me to do when shooting macro.

I thought of that and I am going to pay more attention. After the lens/combo sits for awhile all goes back to normal. This time it was longer that normal.

I have Nikon, but I encountered one lens that wouldn't autofocus when the battery still showed charge but was low. Could it be battery?

I don't think so. The batteries were just charged this AM and the mishap happened within the first ten photos.

After a while it works again. That sounds like an overheating issue.

Been there, done that! If the menu is set to release ONLY when accurate focus is acquired this can cause one to wonder WHAT THE HECK? The difference between in/out of focus in macro can be barely perceptible to my eye through the viewfinder.

Hm. Same problem on two different cameras FF and Crop. My but is on dirty contact on the lens combined with focus priority on the camera. Best of luck.

Is that the only card you can use?? I don't think it's overheating if it happens after just 10 shots.

Had a problem with a Nikkor 180 f/2.8 AF lens on my film cameras. Would not AF till I reversed the twist action, after locking lens to the click state, The lens barely moved, but it was the answer to get the AF and shutter working again. The only lens with that anomaly.

My suggestion is when shooting macro use manual, especially focus then you will know if your too close.
