You walked to Little Roundtop and back alone and no ghosts? Uneasy quiet I understand for sure.

Hung out at Little Roundtop a couple of hours. The 20th Maine's defense of that critical outpost is one of the amazing stories of the whole war. The memorial there is at the very end of the Union line, surrounded by rocks and trees . . . did'nt see any ghosts, but I'm not saying they didn't see me.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I did spend a fair amount of time lining up the composition--and marveling at the courage of the attacking Union troops. Goosebumps.

Let me clarify. This shot is at Antietam (Sharpsburg to the Confederates). I did visit Gettysburg on that same trip and spent a good while at Little Round Top, but the wind was so strong that day that I didn't get any sharp pictures. I also hung out at Devil's Den, where Confederate sharpshooters picked off a number of Union troops untl they themselves were picked off. When I think of the Alabama boys charging again and again up that steep hill through the woods, and when I think of the 20th Maine, commanded by a college rhetoric professor, throwing them back again and again, then finally charging down the hill with empty rifles, I have two very strong feelings. Unguarded admiration for the troops on both sides, and a deep depression over the waste of so many young lives. Must glory and death always walk hand in hand?
