I took my rarely used 28-300 on my walk today to see how well it performs, basically because of a recent thread in which folks commented on how much they either hated or loved it. While it definitely isn't in the same league as a fast prime or even my favorite Tamron 35-150 lens, it did a capable job, and on a scale of 1-10 I'd rate it as 8ish.

Very nice set Sue.

Sue, I am going to put it like this I have never used a lens that did not do its part when I did mine.

My retired ophthalmologist bough two 28-300 Nikon lenses to use with his two D750 bodies. He has taken the lens wherever he has traveled including Africa as a general purpose lens. I have seen his images from those lenses and in my humble opinion those images I saw were excellent. Your series is excellent also.

As you very well know zoom lenses are not easy to build. They have complex optical formulas due to the many corrections that need to be made. Usually the manufacturer has to make some compromises but it is difficult to deny how useful a zoom is and the professional made ones are of excellent optical quality. As you very well know professionals use zooms often. There is nothing worse that missing an opportunity changing lenses with different focal lengths.

If you favor the Sigma I can understand but if I were you I would not neglect the 28-300. It has a very useful focal range and it could easily be the only lens you need in your travels.

For some reason this lens does elicit strong love/hate emotions. I also have it. It's extremely versitile and a very good performer assuming the camera body is providing distorion correction. I typically don't use it unless I need to downsize my kit for example when traveling light yet it is a fine lens. Thanks for the images, they are quite good over a wide range of subject and setting.

Lovely Sue.......it is a very good lens and is quite adequate for walk-around capture.

Just absolutely perfect images. On pic #5 down - the background is perfectly out of focus. I looked at the EXIF data and am curious. What was the lens? It is a very high quality zoon.

Thanks you for sharing, Alan

They were all taken with a Nikko 28-300. Glad you liked them!

Sue, I think you're slighting the lens by giving it an "8ish". The lens is very capable, as you've shown here. Good work on these.

I was being a bit "middle of the road" with that "8ish" - probably because I've been a bit spoiled by sharp primes and that Tamron 35-150. Looking at images on LR I might be rating it a bit low - it's really a pretty decent lens!
