I bought a paper shredder about 20 years ago. It was around $100.00. It came with a one year warranty. For a few more bucks I got an extended two year warranty. My plan was to wait until the waranty was about up and run a 2X4 through it and get a new one. I use it every day at home. As luck would have it... the warranty ran out. It still works perfectly to this day. The warranty was well worth the extra money! LOL :-D

A friend of mine bought a paper shredder and while trying it out he shreded the waranty, go figger. The shredder still works. So I guess he lucked out.

Every expert will tell you that an extended warrenty is a waste of money. Every electronic thing if is bad will crap out very shortly if it dosnt it will last forever. If you buy a Costco (or with a american express card, I think) you get an extra year on the warrenty. Thats 2 years, after that most electronic stuff you want to get a new one.

No. Use the unspent cash for accessories.

Hello to all you seasoned UHH camera buyers,
I would love your opinion on whether you think it is worth the extra $153 for the accidental damage protection (3yrs) and customer care (2yrs). Thanks!

I bought extended warranties on my first 3 digital cameras and my first digital 720p video tape camera. 12 years later they all still work fine but I've moved on to other models that are higher resolution. I keep my cameras in padded cases and I'm very careful when carrying and using them so the accidental damage protection would likely be a waste for me, although accidents do happen. Looking back it seems to have been a waste of money to buy the warranties I did buy. Warranties of this nature are a BIG money maker for stores like Best Buy because they know hardly anybody will end up using it. I'm living proof that they're right.

No you don't! In five years you're going to be itching to upgrade. In ten years they'll have capabilities we're not even thinking about yet. You know I'm right and you know you'll want them.

Yes, I admit you are right, but I promised my husband that this next camera with it's rugged pro body would last foreverrrrr....

And it will unless you drop it off a cliff or throw it in a lake. The manufacturers know their products well, and only a miniscule quantity
of them don't last thru the standard warranty period. Spend any extra money on a UV filter to protect the lens fron dust and any possibility of a careless scratch, and an appropriate camers bag, and such. Selling additional warranties for cars, computers, cameras, and such is to the selling dealer like money found on the street. Forget it, and just take your usual good care of what you buy. Relax, and have fun with your new rig. ......soccermick33@yahoo.com

Another view: I bought a Leica 3F with 4 good Leitz lenses in 1952 and
have taken over 12,000 color slides and some B+W with it while hauling it out thru the Sahara on 5 day hikes, chopper drops, and vehicular trecs in Libya, and from Algiers, to Tunis to Egypt to Ankara, Turkey, and in Europe from Greece to Italy north thru Danamark, all over a period of 6 1/2 years and 30 countries, and then over some of the US. Never a problem. Even dropped it (in the "gadget" bag with all the lenses and Norwood Director light meter and accessories) onto the street in Ankara, Turkey when the bag strap broke. No gear problem. Forget wasting money on additional warranty.

I've owned all sorts of cameras for over forty years, and one has never needed repair.

When you realize the obnoxious percent of profit involved with extended warranties, you can answer your own question.

Like the deductable on my car, I self insure the first $1,000. If it costs less than $1,000 the no insurance.

If it costs more, then I have to consider how fragile it is, how much I will use it, how quickly it will become obsolete, and most importantly, WHO WILL BE SERVICING IT IF IT DOES FAIL? Many extended warranty providors have gone out of business.

I think extended warranties they are almost always a poor value.

Hi kerfree

Let me say this most of those warranties are worthless of the paper they are written on if you do purchase one be sure to read the fine print!

The gimmick in selling them is to make money for store selling them, thay are betting you will never have use it and you are betting you will use it. Save your money and use it toward better glass or memory ect.ect. In all my years of buying expensive stuff I never bought and extended warranty.

Somebody on UHH said about a month ago that they had a relative who worked at Best Buy and although they don't get commissions on sales, he said his relative got a 50% commission on every extended warranty sold.

In my experience they don't offer these deals if they expect you to claim on them.
