My complaint with every camera repair place is they repair and I've never had anyone tell me what's wrong except the actual problem. No explanation or any parts that's needed. Nothing. If I go to a car dealer to get repairs they tell me what's wrong, what part is needed & the price.

If they cannot repair it they do not return your camera or lens, so I always ask for it to be returned so I can choose to dispose or keep it.

I have a 1st Gen Tamron 150-600mm lens that got dust inside. Was told it would cost $650 to repair. A new 2nd generation cost around $600 more with a 6 year warranty so I asked for it to be returned. Didn't know what I would use it for, but I learned on YouTube that I could reverse it to use for another purpose & it works so why not always ask for it back.

Question to those that have sent items under warranty to Canon Repair Center for repair:

Is it customary for the customer to pay for shipping to the center? Are the shipping costs refunded to the customer after the fact or is it just the consumer cost of a failed product?

I am sending a lens in for repair (still under original warranty) from the NW coast to the East cost and no prepaid label was included in the downloaded paperwork. I anticipate the cost of shipping one way with insurance will exceed 35.00 since it's a heavy lens and traveling a long distance.

I had a Nikon D750 that was recalled so that shipping charge was on them. I recently had a Seagate external drive go bad after 55 days and had to send it back to them. I paid for the shipping on that which didn't please me. I should have just taken it back to Costco.

I'm going to wait out the stay at home and then drive the 1 1/2 hr to the Canon Burbank Service center, not using my 70-200 much anyway. Have used their facility 2 years ago and they were fast and super nice. And a good excuse to stop by an European bakery nearby.....

Is it something that you need right away? There is one in Costa Mesa, CA - Canon Factory Service Center
123 PAULARINO AVE
COSTA MESA, CA 92626
866-510-1335

They are temporarily closed because of this damn virus but they will open again. It may be cheeper???

I live in San Diego and I drive my gear up there if I need a repair.

With most companies, you pay the shipping to send it. They pay the return shipping. That's the way it worked for Panasonic (repaired under warranty).

As others have mentioned, whether it's an older or new lens, I've always shipped cameras or lens to repair either 2-day or next day air, and actually insured for full replacement value. With full insurance in case of loss means that UPS or FedEx take notice and tend to be care not to 'throw/drop or lose' your lens. With anything you value, the less time your article spends in shipment, the sooner it's returned to you in good working order. For myself, I've always written the cost of fast shipping to the repair center off as a good investment, to and from. The last time I send a body to be rebuild, the cost with a coupon for UPS next day air was $40. It was repaired in a week and when they asked how I wanted it returned, they said their discounted next-day air freight would cost me $25; sold. Not a dent on the box and the driver was very gentle when handing to me:) Good luck:)
