I've had only one incident where I had to send a Canon product, 70D, back to them for warranty work. Yes, paid to get it to them, and they paid coming back. I used USPS priority mail for less than $20. I also sent a Sigma lens back for auto focus alignment, same deal.

I think that's the way it works. The customer pays to get it there, and the company pays to get it back to you. Pack it securely, insure it fully, and send it the fastest way possible - well, maybe the second fastest way. I always use Priority Mail.

Hey how are you?? Haven't seen your posts in awhile.

Well I have been lucky I guess and haven't had to ship anything back for warranty repair so I don't know who charges for what. Canon's business model provides for only a couple of repair centers requiring most customers to mail their equipment in- that isn't my choice. And it is warranty work. And it was a very expensive lens that should not have failed in 3 months time.

There is a Canon repair center in Southern California.

If you don't mind the 6 to 8 week hold time for nikon over the one week for Canon I guess it's a good deal.

I sent my D700 for repair years ago. It cost $65 to send to the west coast center. The paid for return shipping. I would imagine Canon is pretty much the same.

Question to those that have sent items under warranty to Canon Repair Center for repair:

Is it customary for the customer to pay for shipping to the center? Are the shipping costs refunded to the customer after the fact or is it just the consumer cost of a failed product?

I am sending a lens in for repair (still under original warranty) from the NW coast to the East cost and no prepaid label was included in the downloaded paperwork. I anticipate the cost of shipping one way with insurance will exceed 35.00 since it's a heavy lens and traveling a long distance.

I don't know the answer but I have always had great experience with Canon Repair Centers. Where I lived before in Orange County, there was one just down the street which was like a Canon camera museum as well.

in my humble opinion Canon is an organization that our company avoids altogether - in suit vs. Canon for unfair and deceptive practices.

I would call Canon. I buy from my local store and they take the camera and doit. Buy local.

I admire your honesty. You're correct by saying it's opinion because it's not based on facts.

I think that applies to CPS members only (then there are no shipping costs ever)!

To be sure. Here's Canon's customer service phone number:(800) 652-2666. I've had to call them when I was in similar situations.

You still have to pay one way to Canon. With a CPS Gold you get it returned at no charge with a 20% discount on out of warranty repairs. Also, you get preferential repair with 2 day shipping back at no charge. If they can't fix it in a timely fashion they will send you out a lender. There's plenty of other perks and they vary according to the bronze, gold or platinum CPS membership.

In the past I had to send my camera in that was long out of warranty and each time I'd talk to Canon tech support, they'd arrange for a free prepaid shipping label, so I didn't have to pay anything.
Even when I wasn't satisfied with the quality of the first repair, they issued a second label still free of charge.
Surprised that with your camera, still being under warranty, Canon wants you to pay for shipping.
What about customer satisfaction 100% guarantee with a warranty to match?
In this day and age, with phone cameras eating into their profits they'd better up their game.
This is their business "face" and they'd better save it or they risk losing customers if the word gets around that they "sort of" honor their warranty repairs.... Kinda "half-way"...
