I remember Joe.
You should read about the strip's cartoonist feud with another famous cartoonist. As I recall, those guys got pretty nasty.

I remember Joe and seeing the bicycle strip but do not remember anything about it. The other I don't remember at all. Here in this part of PA we have East Stroudsburg University. It is common to see kids wearing sweatshirts with a big ESU on the front. Each time I see that I'm reminded of a cartoon where this huge football player named Tank McNamara is the main character. He always was wearing an ESU sweatshirt but in that case it stood for Enormous State University.

Ham Fisher, who drew Joe Palooka was from Wilkes-Barre, PA. There is a stone marker in tribute to him on Route 309 between Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton. I seem to recall that one of the mountains was renamed Joe Palooka Mountain.
