One of my bird feeders is very much like this. The difference is that everything, and I mean every last little part, except the clear feed tube is metal. I have used it for 4 or 5 years and no squirrel has managed to defeat it yet. And that's not for lack of trying.

Thank you for your comments.

Yes, some times they chew through even metal, but it seems to be our best hope for defeating these determined creatures.

Air rifle does the trick....

Sorry but I am at war with these rats. As mentioned they will gnaw through soft metal (aluminium) and can wreak havoc because of it. Woman next door lost quite a bit of money when of these rats ate some wire used by the power company and the result was a massive surge in her house and a fried squirrel.

Why at war? Because when we moved in the previous home owner was feeding them and they were all over the place. At first they did not disturb be but then they started chewing on what I was trying to grow and even unearthed up some bulbs.

The first year I was killing about ten a month during the summer. Now I kill only kill two*.

The result of this war and tree cleaning is that the bird population has exploded... They were eating the eggs too, if not the young chicks.

That is too bad. I admire the problem solving skills of these fellow mammals.

That video was so much fun.

My war against squirrels is non-violent. When I see three or more I set a trap. Over the past few years I have relocated almost 40 squirrels to a wilderness area. I release them in the same place so they won't be lonely.

There is one squirrel that will not even stick his head in the trap, even with no other food around. If he jumps on the feeder ... game on.When I open my door and clap he runs up a nearby tree. If I step out side and point he climbs down the tree head first and stays there looking at me. If I close the door part way he hits the ground after 10 seconds. Then he chooses between back to the food or home. If he heads for home across the street he get to my neighbors driveway, stops and looks back. If I have stepped out onto my porch he stares until I clap. His next stop is under my neighbor's car. One more clap and he heads to their porch waiting for one additional clap before heading into the woods behind their house. This has become a breakfast ritual. I think he enjoys it because if he stays on the ground I don't bother him.

It was interesting to see how slow sound really is. The further away he get there is a noticeable difference in the time it takes for any reaction to the clap.

Our forests seem to have a lot more food for squirrels than we are aware of. I stop feeding them around Easter, and no one gives a sign of going hungry.

I put the food out for the birds. The squirrels are invaders.

I ended up getting two feeders - a “bird feeder” and a “squirrel feeder”. Some of the larger birds eat from the later - they especially like the few in-shell peanuts {which seems to be a delicacy for both}, so I guess the squirrels get the smaller part anyway.
