This squirrel is really desperate, but the feeder is definitely in the lower no-squirrel position. I've inspected it and don't see any result from his chewing, but the contents do seem somewhat lower - perhaps some spilled out from all his climbing around.

Good catch and interesting in the amount of tenacity these little critters show.

Thank you for commenting.

Honestly, I just happened to notice out the back window that he was exploring, and had just grabbed my camera when this scene happened in front of it. This probably wouldn’t have occurred a week ago, but I took our local store’s running out of “Squirrel and Critter” food as a sign that it was time to stop filling the squirrel feeder, but it still have a day or two of bird food left.

Squirrels are great acrobats and very determined when it comes to food. They are a lot of fun to watch as long as you can keep them out of the bird food. They don't seem to notice the difference.

Thank for your comment.

I guess this one forgot where he buried acorns last Fall, and to squirrel, almost any food 'will do'.

I have watched many squirrels bury acorns. One year I made notes of every one I saw. I never saw a single squirrel dig up even one acorn. Either they have short memories or they are just planting trees, take your pick. I have, on rare occasion, seen them fall, a couple from a great height. They invariably just look embarrassed and run off, none the worse for wear.

Contrary to belief and advertisers' claims, there is no such thing as a "squirrel-proof" bird feeder!

Au contraire. I have two of them that work very well.

Perhaps this would not have made it through the entire year, but it did last from the time I hung it up {Thanksgiving} until now. I didn't actually see any chewing marks on it, and I'll be taking it down as soon as I run out of bird feed in another day or so, so I'm guessing it will make it through a full season. In the past, when I've used something like this, the clear plastic succumbs to UV exposure, and that has been the weakest point.

Thank you for your compliment also.

At this time at home, I'm glad he did it right in front of me.

It's hard to outsmart Mr. Squirrel.

Thank you for your comment.

We have had several squirrels investigate the top, but it seems to be OK still.
Sorry for the damage to yours, though - they certainly are clever and persistent.

One of my bird feeders is very much like this. The difference is that everything, and I mean every last little part, except the clear feed tube is metal. I have used it for 4 or 5 years and no squirrel has managed to defeat it yet. And that's not for lack of trying.
