I downloaded the latest version of Irfanview and low and behold it doesn't draw a blank with either NEF or DNG formats. You can work with them but you can't save in RAW format. You're stuck with jpeg.

That's good to know. Did you notice if it also does CR2 files. I understand why it won't save the RAW files.

If this page is up to date, you need a plug-in to read cr2:
https://www.irfanview.com/main_formats.htmOne recommendation I saw about editing raw in IrfanView is to save as tiff.
Thanks for the heads-up. I downloaded some images from Jared Polin last year that it wouldn't load...I'll try the latest version now.
Thank you, I always save as TIFF.
I use Irfanview to preview and cull my shots. My Canon 80D produces CR2 files so I have had to install the plugin that Linda From Maine so rightly points to.
My comment relates more to how awesome Irfanview really is. I haven't researched it, but how in the world is there a business model that supports such a great product when the price is ZERO? It's lightning fast. It renders excellent images. It allows me to delete unwanted shots on the spot. Good grief Batman!
Heck I haven't even plunged into Irfanview in any depth at all but I am blown away.

I've used Irfanview for years, but for viewing / tagging / deleting after a shoot, I've been using FastStone Image Viewer a lot lately. It lets me flip through photos faster than Irfanview, and by hitting "Q" I can tag a photo. Really handy feature. Lets you tag photos, then show only those photos, then you can drag and drop them into Lightroom or whatever you use.

Since a raw file is unedited, if you saved in raw it would just be the original and all your edits would be gone.

If you are a Canon user, it will open CR2 and CR3 Raw files.

I'm a long-time user of Irfanview, and I'm not exactly sure what you mean.
I've always been able to open pictures that I shot in raw using Irfanview. When I asked about that here, members said that Irfanview was showing me the JPEG contained within the raw file.

Yes, Irfanview is excellent! It is the bets program I've found for removing spots.

Jerry, I've looked art every menu and can't find anything referencing 'spot removal'. Where is it?

I have been able to open raw (nef) files in IrfanView for many years. However, IrfanView does not use the raw data. It uses the preview embedded in the raw. Yes, you can edit that, but it's like editing a jpg, not like editing a raw file.

I just downloaded this -- thanks for the info! I was testing out how it worked and everything seemed really good until I threw a tint on the photo I was working on. I couldn't get it off. I tried using the undo arrow but the tint would not come off. A couple of other things that wasn't just right: On downloading the program, it did not ask me where I wanted it saved. I would not have chosen my "C" drive since it is pretty full but I think that is where it went. Also when closing out the program it did not ask if I wanted to save the changes I had made to the image I was working on -- this could cost someone their work if in fact they did want to save the changes or leave changes that were not wanted. The range of tools this program offers is very good though and I could see someone that isn't into doing a lot of post processing using this exclusively. I will have to delve farther into some of the tools. Most of what I tried worked really well. Thanks again for the link.
