A very nice and interesting set David. I assume they shut down for the winters. I imagine the waters would be frozen over ?
Thank you. I don't know. One of the signs indicated they had a way of thawing the gravel so that the dredge could scoop it up. Maybe the generator heat was used to keep the water warm?

Much of that ground is frozen, so steam points were used to thaw the ground. When it was thawed, the dredge would back up to the ore-bearing area and begin scooping it up.

Great series. The internals are incredible. In the early 1960s I watched a similar one in operation at Cripple Creek, Alaska a few miles west of Fairbanks. Thanks for that post.

You're welcome, and I'm glad you liked them. The outside shots were mostly made with a D50 (2007) and the interiors with a D7000 (2014); all with the same 18-200VR zoom (first version). That lens is truly amazing.

I would dearly like to have been able to see one of those enormous machines in operation.

Very interesting set, to me! We got to visit Dawson City in 2014. Was behind schedule so didn't get to visit the dredge. But we did go to a working mine, WORST road I have ever driven on, lol. Mud 10 inches deep in places. But I did get to do a little tourist gold mining, and yes, I did find a few! Thanks for sharing the info, and memories!

There are indeed pleasant memories, however there was a dark side also... The most expensive hotel I have ever stayed in, and it was the WORST, EVER! Wiring hanging out of an outlet, shoddy at best! Very bad room, period (not just the wiring!), we were afraid to sleep in it, due to fire hazards, and more!
Did you go all the way over the 'Top of the World' highway? It is beautiful, and very different from the other Alaskan mountains. I saw where you went at least as far as Chicken. Our visit was the end of June, 2014.

Doug, I've not been farther north than Dawson City and Fairbanks. I have seen Mile Zero of the ALCAN Highway. Regarding accommodations, John Hall's Alaska usually engages pretty good hotels.
