Dredge No. 4 near Dawson City

Dredge No. 4 in Dawson City, Yukon Territory
I toured Alaska and the Yukon in 2007 and 2014 and both times visited this old Dredge No. 4, a relic of the old gold mining days. These huge machines would slowly move over the ground, scooping up major quantities of earth and running it through crushing and screening operations inside to separate out the gold. The mechanical structures are enormous! This photo set will include pictures from both visits to the site. They are shown here in reduced resolution—they are hosted on Flickr and can be seen in full resolution with available descriptions by clicking on them.

These are really fascinating images. I can't imagine it ever being built and it must have been tricky to operate properly. Really off the hook machine.

I've been to Alaska several times, but never went to Chicken.

I've been to Chicken and I've seen the dredge from a distance. I didn't know they had tours of it.
Thanks, everyone, for the nice words. I know my sets get pretty large, but some topics just don't work with just a few pictures. (I've done 4 now about mining. I do have other interests, I swear.)
Those dredges were some monstrous machines. I remember, when I was a kid, we lived in Fairbanks in the mid-50’s, and there were a few dredges in the area. The world’s largest dredge was located in the community of Esther, just outside Faribanks. There were a couple, located in the gold mining area out of Fairbanks, along the Steese Hwy. One of the interesting things is that a lot of gold actually managed to escape capture by the dredges, and ended up concealed in the tailing piles. In fact, one of largest gold nuggets ever found was located by someone digging around in a tailing pile. I guess it was so big that it went out with the larger rocks and boulders, while the small nuggets and fines were trapped in the riffles and kept for the refining process.
Those are interesting photos of the internals of the dredge. #4 is probably one of the last remaining intact dredges. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for your comments, Wingpilot. Especially about the large nugget.
What a piece of machinery. Looks like a ship on land. Thanks for posting, David.

My question has always been, who got claim to that big nugget. Is the tailing pile abandoned and the previous owners or users relinquished any claim or did they retain claim on anything of big value like that found in the tailings. At the time it had been many years since that location had been mined. I never did find out.

Well, they were intended to float on the water.
Regarding the nugget: I would think that the "claim" was for the land area and the tailings pile would be covered by it.

RC, it's located a fair distance outside of town. Several companies offer tours to it, and I'm sure it is possible to get directions. There are a few smaller sites along the road with interesting artifacts, too. I don't think I'd take a nice car over the road, but tour busses make it OK.
I was in Ouray, CO a couple of years ago. There were some mining towns not accessible by street cars but you could rent jeeps at a couple of locations in town and there were some guided tours in jeeps that would take you to some of those locations. Maybe there are businesses like that in that area. I really liked the shots of the gears and cables. Rust is a favorite subject of mine. Nice shots and story, thanks.
Thanks, Bridges. My "stories" are a lot shorter than some of the great ones others post--I like to say it with pictures. I do try to put descriptions on my photos (on Flickr) so I recommend people click on them here in order to see them.

Thanks. It was pretty dark inside, but cameras and post processing do remarkable things.
A very nice and interesting set David. I assume they shut down for the winters. I imagine the waters would be frozen over ?
