Why do YOU click on a picture ???

In the photo gallery, if a title interests me, I’ll take a look. I get some good ideas for my own photography, helps to improve what I do. I appreciate what others do, because it helps me.

When I decide to view a topic, it is mostly based on what is NOT in the title. For example, "Bird in Flight" is something I avoid clicking on because I generally find such images simply not interesting. "Waterfall" and "Squirrel" are also topics I stay away from.

Mmmmmm....just curious, how one gets views ??
Not that I'm crying... but in a bunch of days, on a pic I think is great [ok, not too bad] I see 70ish views, but an out of focus robin can 1439 views ???
Just wondering..what prompts one to view a topic ??
The title ?? The poster ??
Just looking for input, not sarcasm !
Thanks to the good guys here, you know who you are !!!

I couldn't tell you what makes an image popular. The image below, taken and posted in 2007 was a pretty unremarkable/unmemorable image. It was a test of a newly acquired lens and a trial of Photomatix Pro HDR and tonemapping software. I have no explanation for how it got 8506 views, the majority of which happened in the 3 months after I posted it.

The picture didn't get the views, your thread did.
People have to go to your thread to see the picture.
Once they have accessed your thread, the counter increments.
THEN they get to see your picture.

The only way they they can see your pictures without incrementing the thread view counter is to see it listed in "Newest Pictures" (which is relatively new); If they click on tour picture in Newest Pictures, they go to your thread, which increments the thread counter. If they do not click on the picture, the thread counter will not get incremented.

BIF - bird(s) in flight
BL - bird landing
BTO - bird taking off
SIT - spider in tree. or is it squirrel in tree?

Why can't people use words other than the abbrevs that less than half of us know??
Do they hate typing that much?
Maybe they think it's cute.
So many posts I blow by because of lousy titles.

I do like waterfall shots though.

In 2007 there was no thread - I am not sure what you are talking about. I only joined UHH in 2014, and by then there were already over 7K views on the image. I don't post in galleries here. There is no question that the picture got the views in Flickr and it had nothing to do with UHH.

Views... where? At UHH?
Where was the image posted in 2007 if not in a thread here?

Just explaining how things work NOW.

Flickr- if you bothered to look at the bottom of the image, were it says "_DSC6201And8More_tonemapped-large by Gene Lugo, on Flickr"

The analogy is perfectly valid - whether you get views here on UHH, Facebook, Flickr, Smugmug - etc - it's a view that is more global - and the mechanism that apply to clicking on pictures here are no different than the mechanisms that apply to clicking on just about anything on the internet, including pictures.

It's a broader view of why people click on stuff - and a comment that it is not specific to what goes on here.

Never do, I just look at the image.
And you could have referenced where (could have been multiple places) in your text if you bothered to communicate efficiently...
That's why I asked if at UHH. Where the CURRENT image is visible to me, does not imply where it was when you were referencing the view count.

Yup different audience, same counter mechanism.

By the way, everyone who clicks on your image in the thread here increments the view counter on Flicker.

From my observations the way you get your images seen by the most members resulting in a high view count is if they make it into the UHH daily digest (of which I've read there are several versions). How that happens, how they get selected and why they are selected remains a bit of a mystery. I am assuming there is some sort of algorithm that comes up with the list each day. And I also assume that algorithm is tied somehow to the number of views each posting gets prior to digest publication each day. I could easily be wrong though. There might be an actual live person in the backroom making all these decisions - but I doubt it.

The activity on day of posting does determine whether a topic makes it into the digest. That doesn't necessarily mean all 35 spots for Gallery are that way, but many.

The volunteer-moderated sections have five slots in the digest. Most sections don't exceed that many topics in a day, so popularity isn't an issue. If there are more than five, Admin or the algorithm determines - not the section managers.

Yes, there is more than one version of the digest because of worldwide membership.

First of all, it's called Flickr - it's a photo hosting website used by millions of people, not a bird.

Second, If you were paying attention, you would have seen the part where it shows where the image is, and it is a hot link to the image which opens in Flickr See below. I posted it twice in case you missed it the 4th time - can't be too careful around here - some people blame their inability to read on a failure of the person presenting the information . . . Just sayin'

Is that clear and efficient enough for you?

Besides, what exactly is your criticism about anyway (talk about lack of clarity)

You might want to try going back to bed and getting out of the OTHER side of the bed. Your choice this morning was clearly the wrong one . . .Just sayin'

In the Gallery some of the regulars have quite a following and whatever they post will elicit dozens of comments and hundreds of views.
