Mmmmmm....just curious, how one gets views ??
Not that I'm crying... but in a bunch of days, on a pic I think is great [ok, not too bad] I see 70ish views, but an out of focus robin can 1439 views ???
Just wondering..what prompts one to view a topic ??
The title ?? The poster ??
Just looking for input, not sarcasm !

For me Steve, it starts with the title, then the image. If the image is good, I will make a positive comment. If the image has some major defects, I move on.

Nice image. A good title will get people to look. Commenting after looking takes a good image.

I agree with Steve and Kpmac and I'll add a reasonable accurate title description.
Also, the forum can move very fast. Topics move down the line just as fast.

I 'click' on images that have some appeal to me. More often than not, that'll be a landscape, but I don't limit myself to just those --a well-seen image is a well-seen image, and that is my basic criteria. I confess, whether or not I comment on an image, there are images posted by people here that may at times be may be technically 'better' than others, but ultimate sharpness, absolute fidelity to some sort of 'reality,' or that the image is somehow considered 'iconic' of anything do not mean a great deal to me. A well considered image is a well considered image, and originality, what I perceive to be more an image seen and conceived and executed more by a conscious mind than by the capabilities of some camera or some lens, and/or pure, simple honesty (even if some technical aspects may be wanting, or the photog may be more in some learning stage): those are the things I look for, and click on.
Take a look at the threads of posts with high reply counts. Often, half of those many replies are the poster saying 'thank you' in some way. Yes, its 'nice' to be polite and respond to someone's comment, and most posters want to be seen as being polite. Others, however, are more concerned with whether or not they've communicated anything.

As I'm not really a bird person (just ask CPO_Retired) I tend to pass on those. And the others, the title guides me in.
I'm with everyone else, I won't comment unless I like it, or the OP asks for input.

I scan over the titles. If the title is interesting I will click on it and if I like the picture I will leave a compliment. If the poster asks for an opinion I will leave a positive suggestion if I can think of one.
If I think the post is going to be another 'bird on stick' or a squirrel pic I'll skip over it. I know there are a lot of folks here who, for health reasons, can only go as far as their back porch and I applaud them for trying, but I think in a lot of cases it is just laziness or lack of creativity.

As far as topic title being the draw, why do topics titled "Help" in the main forum get so many views? 
With Photo Gallery, I agree it's likely the title: descriptive for those interested in what the title implies is subject, clever for those curious to see what it really is about.

Another way that "views" increase is when a topic makes it onto the home page (look at that while not logged in to understand). They are shown on the home page when they receive a high number of comments. The popular become more popular!
Lastly, the emailed daily digest has much to do with popularity of topics. Photo Gallery can have 70 - 100 topics posted in 24 hours, yet the digest contains only 35.
It's not uncommon to hear someone complain that their topic went unnoticed (few comments) because it didn't make it into the digest.

To answer your title question: to see it on a black background or see it larger if that option is available.
The post view count is incremented when people look at your post, not the image.
"Downloading" an image contained in the thread once you open the thread does not increment the post view counter.
A good informative title will interest people to view your post.
(Some people like cutesie titles, which may also work.)

Even if viewed via thumbnail in "newest pictures," clicking into the topic has nothing to do with quality of the image or whether you make a comment. You can't take back a "view"
