using a Canon manual TS-E lens with Metabones adapter on Sony a7R iii: does IBIS work on a lens like this ?
If it's IBIS then yes.
Joe
Yes, and it works better if you go into the Sony menus and manually set the focal length in the camera to match the lens.

IBIS being
in body, will work with
any lens, but it does need to know approximate focal length of lens in use to work well.
now, there's the real challenge

What is IBIS? Since joining UHHs I've seen a boat load of acronyms that I don't have any idea what they are.

Image stabilization, vibration compensation, and vibration reduction are all similar.
IBIS, or In BODY Image Stabilization, is a mechanism and firmware in the camera body that compensates for camera shake, shutter shock, etc. during exposure with slower shutter speeds.
ILIS, or In LENS Image Stabilization, is a mechanism and firmware in the LENS that compensates for camera shake, etc.
Every manufacturer has a different acronym for image stabilization. You'll see IS, OIS, VR, VC, IBIS, ILIS, Dual IS, Dual IS II, and probably some I've forgotten. They all do pretty much the same things, but they do them to different degrees of effectiveness and with different technologies.
IBIS is generally most effective at focal lengths under 200mm FULL FRAME EQUIVALENT FIELD OF VIEW. ILIS is generally most effective at longer focal lengths.
So... Pay your money and take your choice.

In Body Image Stabilization ( as opposed to in lens stabilization )

"IBIS" stands for "In Body Image Stabilization".
The body has stabilization built in, so the lenses don't necessarily need it.
I have had the Pentax version for five years now, and it works great, even with fifty-year-old lenses!!
Thanks for the clarification it true you Lear something new everyday.

“Better if” ???
Paul’s advice is too understated. You MUST set the FL in the menu or else your IBIS can do more harm than help.
As a user of various manual lenses I use the Fn menu for faster access. IIRC I used to have an Fn button dedicated to setting the FL for the IBIS. But I needed the button for other use. The Fn menu is fast enuf for my needs.
