Thanks Al, my son collects a lot of vintage war items. He does research on every item and was looking for a pack of cigarettes from this time period to put under his "hatband". So this is called a "Steel pot" how interesting. Thanks for that.

We called it a steel pot. It was actually a steel outer pot (helmet) with an inner "helmet liner" that was made out of some type of fiberglass type stuff with a web harness that sat on your head. It was 50 years ago so I'm having to rely on an aging memory. Besides wearing them we also used them to cook/heat c-rations, etc. when a mess hall wasn't handy. As crazy as it may sound, we often used small pieces of C-4 blasting explosive as our cooking fire. It was really quite safe as long as it didn't have a blasting cap inserted. That's probably too much information, sorry. I guess I'm "enjoying" too much free time at home. <Gr>. Take care & ...

Great photo. Wasn't this the first aircraft to drop an atomic bomb?

Yes it was. This was taken at the Smithsonian when the fuselage was displayed through a wall. The cockpit section was the only part exposed through this side of a wall.

Just one item about cooking with C-4. We were told don't try to stamp out the fire with our feet.
