My father was in WWI in Europe, and ikn his spare time he made what is called "Trench Art" out of used shells. Here are 2 examples. I also have the negatives of pictures he took in the army – troop ships, bombed-out cities, etc.

Looks like some awesome stuff! What's *really* awesome are those negs! Are you going to work them?

Yes, I'm going to scan them when I get some time. They're very interesting. There are some 4x5 glass-plate negs, and some plastic ones from the Kodak 1a Junior that he bought in Paris. I found both of the cameras in the attic after he died, as well as the negs.

The road sign at customs where we were checking out.

The bunker where we went for mortar and rocket attacks.

Where we lived behind concrete barriers so as to limit the damage a mortar could do.

Fortunately we had a C Ram that was able to take out around 76 percent of incoming rocket or mortar. Not pictured but an awesome weapon.

Recieving the Air Medal.

Minor explosion on the airport.

Basrah Irag. Very close to Iran and had good gunners and lots of oil. More bullets fired during this month than any other month in Iraq. English were trying to get back in after leaving. We sent an aviation Brigade down there to help them. Major offensive.

I know I'm really late for this Challenge but I'm not sure how to add photos to the challenge so I just hit reply to see if that works. I retired after 27 1/2 years of service as a combat engineer looking for and reducing IEDs in Iraq for 3 tours. After 6 years of retirement Uncle Sam has asked me to come back to active duty and move to Ft. Lewis Washington and do a tour of Afghanistan, I Proudly and Patriotically said "Hell yeah" I don't know when Ill be leaving due to the Coronavirus but hopefully soon. I dug through my files to add to your Challenge Thank you for hosting this and hope you all enjoy a little bit of what I've done and about to do again. God Bless

Here is one of my favorite pictures. We were letting the F15s practice intercepting aircraft. I was flying a King Air 200. Had about 6 or 8 of them intercept us but this one got closer. They talk on guard with instructions. Move up and wag the wings. When they pull forward and pop flares the next move would be to splash it if still in noncompliance.

Guard is a universal emergency frequency. 243.0 uhf or 121.5vhf. They are a monitor for all aircraft and call only in emergency. ELT emergency locator transmitters are on those frequencies also. It is a system so a pilot should be able to listen to that transmission even tho he is talking to center or some other agency. Not all aircraft can monitor as well them at the same time talk on another frequency. We in the military could so we ended up looking for stuff such as ELTs for center. I tried to locate a Scenic Air crash for approach control in Las Vegas. I got the ELT but couldn't get out of the clouds to find it.

A military radio has transmit, receive and TR&G which is transmit receive and guard. I could transmit on the set frequency receive on the same and also receive guard frequency.

We could also tell an aircraft to meet us on a frequency by transmitting it on guard. Not what it's for but it works just the same.

...thanks for the explanation. I had an idea what you meant only because I flew military long ago...those without an info base would have no clue what you were talking about. We used a kind've universal VHF freq in 'Nam...you could say that was our "guard."

It was quite common to have what we called a "company frequency." IF everyone were using a frequency and you wanted to talk fishing or something you break in and say come up company. You would both go to that frequency and have a little more private conversation other than the rest of the world. The guard freqs are official and supposedly no use other than official. Many a time someone came up 121.5 and said come up company.

...similar in my Cav troop. VHF was the "universal", FM was the squadron and UHF was our troop ("company") Freq and was supposed to be untouchable by anyone other than us chickens. When I was down in the trees working (scouting...finding stuff) if anyone not associated with our mission came up they'd be in deep doo-doo (because I'm in a high-risk situation, doncha know). Lowly warrant officer me would get to chew on the offending party on occasion...once it was a General officer who didn't know the protocols. That was sweet. ;0)
