Perhaps a real viewfinder?

Are you saying the 77D has a fake view finder?

Last I looked the M3 did not have one. Or did you miss that?

I wouldn't buy any new camera for the next six months - especially a Canon unless I had a very specific requirement for an immediate project. If the rumor mills are correct the new canon R5 and R6 should be announced and available by fall. They seem to fall in the close to $2000 and close to $3500 price range, but with a few google searches you can find out for yourself. If that sounds pricey, the currently available RP may meet your requirements for under a $1000. By the way, significant series M lenses and cameras seem to be scheduled for the end of 2020 and early 2021.

Canon looks poised to pull another EF coup with the RF mount.
Some really amazing lenses and cameras.

The EOS R5 will change the way people think about mirrorless, about photography, about life ....

I have a 77D that I use for macro only. The camera is pretty old technology. I use my EOS R mostly now with a Canon adapter to use my EF lenses and have only 1 RF mount. I am waiting until later in the year to see how the new EOS R6 (6 series camera) and the R5 (5 series) compare in my shooting environment.

I have a Canon M3 24MP mirrorless camera and I’m thinking to replace it with a Canon EOS 77D DSLR 24.2 MP. Any opinions or recommendations, please do not recommend a different brand I have been using Canon for over 25 year digital or film. Thank you.

Honestly, at this point I'd either upgrade to the M6 Mark II (similar to your M3 and uses the same lenses)... or the EOS 90D. Just be aware that none of your EF-M mount lenses for the M3 will fit or work on the 90D. You'll need all new lenses for it (OTOH, the EF/EF-S mount lenses for the 90D *can* easily be adapted for use on an M-series camera).

Going from M3 to 77D would be sort of a sideways move.... 24MP to 24MP. They have similar AF systems too: 49-point and 45-point. And they have similar 3" rear LCD and not all that different frame rates (4.5 frames per second vs 6 fps with the 77D). https://cameradecision.com/compare/Canon-EOS-M3-vs-Canon-EOS-77D

Both the M6II and 90D offer a next-generation sensor. In fact, with 32.5MP they have the highest resolution of any APS-C format camera.... even have more than many full frame cameras (including most Canon full frame).

The M6II has a more sophisticated AF system that some reviewers say works better tracking movement than the 90D... But even the latter is an improved AF system over the 77D, although both use 45-point. The 90D has a 100% viewfinder with higher magnification than the 77D... plus the 90D uses a true pentaprism, making for a brighter viewfinder.

M6II doesn't have a built in viewfinder. If you want one, it instead uses an add-on electronic viewfinder... EVF-DC2. I think it also can use the earlier EVF-DC1, if you have one you are using with your M3.

90D and M6II also have faster frame rates.... around 10fps (vs 4.5 fps with your M3 and 6 fps w/77D). Actually, both 90D and M6II can shoot even faster, but that requires locked focus (which is usually impractical for things you shoot at high frame rates).

The M6II has the same 30 second to 1/4000 mechanical shutter speed range as your M3, but it adds an electronic shutter up to 1/16000.

The 90D has a 30 second to 1/8000 mechanical shutter.

Both the 77D and 90D will get more shots per battery charge, than either of the mirrorless M3 or M6II. That's because the mirrorless cameras use much smaller batteries and their electronic viewfinder or LCD screen use a lot more power than the DSLRs' optical viewfinders.

Yes, M6 Mark II and, especially, 90D cost more than the 77D. But they are also a lot more "future proof"... the very latest APS-C models, rather than one that's now a few years old.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/compare/Canon_77D_vs_Canon_M6_Mark_II_vs_Canon_90D/BHitems/1318281-REG_1502491-REG_1502488-REG

Canon R-series cameras are all full frame... unlike M3, 77D, M6II, 90D, all of which are APS-C format.

APS-C cameras and their lenses can be smaller, lighter and significantly less expensive. Recent APS-C cameras are more than sufficient for most peoples' "real world" uses. Especially newer models like the M6 Mark II and 90D, with their "next generation" sensor. The 32.5MP they offer is more than EOS 6D Mark II (26MP), EOS 5D Mark IV (30MP), EOS RP (26MP) or EOS R (30MP). I'm not saying it's exactly the same... it's not. But it's waaaayyyy more than enough for most peoples' actual uses.

I would look at the EOS RP also. The R series seems to be the way Canon is going for the future and they are bringing more lenses on line, both very expensive and moderately priced, all the time. I have an R and won't be going back to DSLR. There are supposed to be a couple of new R series bodies coming out this year. Might be worth it to wait and see what they are.

I second these comments. I recently made the switch from DSLR to an EOS R and will not be going back. I would wait for newly announced R series camera and make a decision then. For the record, I love my R. I use it with a combination of “old” and “new” lenses.
