This is a MALE American Goldfinch in winter plumage. It can be determined as male by the black, not brown wing feathers. Having banded literally thousands of these birds, I am confident in this ID. Cheers.

It is an American Goldfinch. In basic (nonbreeding) plumage they are quite dull looking. Not bright yellow.

Part of what has confused me is that I have seen birds which I recognized as male Goldfinches around here. Looking through old pictures, I found two of them, but they seem to have been in breeding plumage in times that bracket this one.

I really hope another comes by, one that is willing to show me its beak.

Both are male American Goldfinches, but in different plumages.

The head doesn't look right for a Goldfinch, and at least here, even off season the Goldfinches are much brighter yellow. In any case, I did add a question mark to the I.D.

The winter plumage of the goldfinches that visited my feeder in NC was almost olive drab with very little yellow. They were just getting their yellow back by the time that they left for their nesting ground.

Looks like the ones in my yard in ID. The guys are beginning to put on their bright yellow coats.

I saw this bird at our feeder this afternoon, but he was here for only a short while and refused to show a frontal view. Does anyone recognize him?

and barely a week later, he is 'gold' indeed {although he may not have had a few tummy feathers fall off yet}.
