I saw this bird at our feeder this afternoon, but he was here for only a short while and refused to show a frontal view. Does anyone recognize him?

The head doesn't look right for a Goldfinch, and at least here, even off season the Goldfinches are much brighter yellow. In any case, I did add a question mark to the I.D.

Thank you all three.

It gives my wife a chance with her bird book

{and tells me I'd better stop using the pronoun "he"}.

I will venture that it is a Goldfinch, either female or an immature/non breeding male.

Sibley

although she tells me that they have an ‘APP’ which she uses more than the book these days.

It is an American Goldfinch. In basic (nonbreeding) plumage they are quite dull looking. Not bright yellow.

It is not a female Evening Grosbeak. Besides being too small, an Evening Grosbeak would be an extremely rare bird there.

Thank you both for your comments.

My wife keeps telling me that the head is very important, but unfortunately her head was in the feeder virtually the entire time her body was in sight. She is very quick.
