Using Textured Backgrounds via Layer Masking

I use textured background images as layer masks over my subject photo, then "paint" my subject to bring it to the foreground. Here are a couple of examples. In "Orchids" the background is a blurred version of an oil painting in my living room. In "Dogwood" the background was created by panning a wooded scene.

The painting is a tedious process, but the finished products worth it. Comments welcome.

These are very lovely, Mark. Subtle and beautiful. Thank you for posting to PP Forum!

Did you notice that one of the stickied topics is a "texture library?"

Feel free to use anything from there, and if you have one you'd like to offer to others, let me know and I'll add it. All the best to you.

It would be beneficial if you spelled out the steps you take, mffox.

I would like to encourage all who post topics here to think of PP Forum's primary purpose as learning/teaching. Matt, feel free to include screenprints of your actions, if that is easier, and any tips on what was involved in the "painting" (revealing).

Also, if you have questions about specific actions, don't hesitate to ask as there are several folks here who do layers and masking regularly. Thanks again.

Sorry, I'll go back add the link to my earlier comment. On PP Forum's first page, there are three stickied topics. The second one down is a small collection of textures offered by members:

The thread also contains links to sites that offer free textures + many hints on how to create your own. Be sure to scroll the entire page. Hopefully we'll add more as time goes on.

Very nice set Mark. It never occurred to me to use pictures as subjects for backgrounds, thanks.
