Hood problem

Can anyone tell me why I get this affect on some of my photos please? I am using a Canon 7D and this photo was taken with a EFS 15-85mm lens with the correct Canon hood. It has happened with and without the sun in the picture.
Thank you.

Taking your word for it that it is the correct hood for the lens, then it is not attached properly. The correct hood for a lens will never show up in the image.
Make sure it is all the way on.

Try removing any filters -- hood only.

From my perspective, I believe Captain is correct (assuming it's the correct hood). My filter(s) sit inside the hood-- so unless it's an odd design-- I don't believe it's a filter issue

I purchased the hood at the same time I purchased the lens and it all came from Canon so I can only assume they knew what they were sending me but thanks for the suggestion.

OK, but did you check to see if it is seated correctly? If it is mounted just a bit crooked, this could happen.

Trish. Attached is a photo of the hood from my 16-85mm lens. The depth of the hood at it's greatest is 1.5 inches. Place your hood on a table and measure in the same way and then measure the diameter. Your lens, at it's widest should have similar coverage. If your hood measures anything more than 1.5''- or if the diameter is less than something close to 3 & 5/8"-- you have the wrong hood.

Yes my hood matches up with your measurements in your photo so maybe I am not seating it correctly, that is the only thing that seems to be the answer at the moment.
Thanks for helping.

It appears the correct model hood for this lens is EW78-E. If this is what you have there should be no problem if the hood is mounted correctly.

Did your flash fire? If it did then it's the flash hitting the hood. If not, then the other posts offer possible issues.

it is NOT the flash hitting the hood, that is obvious. The dark areas are in the corners in the sky. Please tell me what flash in the world lights up the sky but is being blocked by a hood? A hood shadow from flash looks a lot different than what is shown here.

One other thing to think about is the position of your hood. If we can assume you seated it fully and correctly it is possible with some hoods to turn them 90 degrees and fit them in the wrong orientation. This then allows the larger petals to be where the smaller ones should be, if you have a petal type lens hood that is.

If you can't get a fix from what has been said here and you can't find another hood that works, then simply trim off a little of the hood at the points it shows. That would be a last resort of course. I'm sure it is something that has already been mentioned here.

Many thanks for all your suggestions.
No the flash did not fire.
Not sure that I would want to start carving up the hood however I did try and move the petals around when I was taking some photos but then it definitely didn't sit correctly.
Will just have to keep working on it till I figure it out.

I don't have that lens but I have many Canon lenses. All of the lenses I have use a bayonet mount which only lets you attach it two ways and either way is fine. The cut out part of the pedals are usually at the four corners of the frame. '

It's possible that Canon sent the wrong hood. They are humans over at Canon too!

I wondered about that too but then the other chap that included the photo of his hood has the same one for the same lens so it appears to be the correct hood but thanks anyway.

Maybe your lens is just a tiny bit wider than the normal lenses. Go to a camera shop and try one side by side with your lens.
