Yes.

One of the benefits of regularly participating in a small volunteer-moderated section is you become acquainted with the other users, their goals and interests.

You also learn that opinions are simply that. Great Truth Tellers are of no value to anyone.

I don’t wish to be negative in any way, however, I sometimes ask myself why on earth do our members say such wonderful things about some photographs submitted that are clearly poor. Some are either soft, out of focus, poorly composed and colourless and yet much of the dialogue submitted by viewers is over-the-top supportive and clearly not accurate. Might it be political correctness invading the forum or we need glasses? I get that we love to support one another, however, honesty or no comment at all might be far more appropriate perhaps...

Cheers!

Don't you just hate it when others think differently than you?

If I like it, even though it may not be "perfect", which is a relative condition, I say I like it.

If you like it say like it. It's fair as the picture may not be good but you like it. I do think people have rights to say that the pictures were bad if they think they are bad. I just don't want to say it because I think people who posted them didn't think they are bad. In fact they mostly think they are very good.

Most of the pictures on this site are of poor quality and their authors expect only congratulations.
Pity but this is how it is.

Yup, they like them, otherwise they probably would not have posted it/them.
Everyone's taste is different.
Does that make someone's taste or interpretation wrong? No. Simply different.
It would be very boring if we all thought alike, wouldn't it?

It's all in the mind's eye of the viewer.

Criticism is a potentially thorny subject. As Linda mentioned, some of the subsections are feedback-oriented, and both positive and negative comments are welcomed. The Photo Gallery is another matter. Its prime function is sharing. Some non-professionals may feel the need for something to justify their efforts and expenditure, and a sharing platform serves that function. Without that, many of the Gallery regulars would just see most of their efforts end up on their hard drive never to be seen by anybody except themselves. Those people aren't looking for penetrating critique and aren't concerned that their efforts aren't producing professional quality photos, so the criticisms aren't welcome and aren't going to evoke improvement. Gallery posters know where to go if they want constructive feedback and critique. But I agree with your suggestion that holding back justified negative comments won't result in improvement and growth.

I do agree.

Equally important is remembering that each Section has a purpose. If a person cannot keep opinions to his/her self, then s/he should not visit the Gallery - which is simply to show work. If one wants to criticize, then spend time at the Critique Section.

Didn't we have this same discussion just a week or two ago???
I remember Linda-no-longer-from-Maine correcting my descriptions of Section purposes.

The Photo Gallery is just that. A place to showcase your work. How many of us here started out taking outstanding top-of-the-line photographs? We get caught up in our own skills that we forget where we started. Anyone who can say they were “always” a great photographer is a narcissistic fool. Let the people on this website post what they like and want to post. If you don’t like it, pass it up. When they ask for feedback then attempt to be a bit humble in your criticism. I am amazed that we even need to discuss this topic.

LOL, there are no new discussions in main discussion forum. You can go back years and see the same topics.

The difference is there are new people joining and old departing nearly every day.

Hey there is a cliff at the end of the road!!! SLOW DOWN!!!

A great truth (existing cliff) a good advice (slow down)..... Has no value?
Oh! ****! he did not listen, I told the truth.

Let's all stay silent and watch fools speed to their death!

I know it is Darwin working hard to thin the herd but...

Photography is the same, the truth must be heard even when painful. There is a dedicated section for "YES!!! MORE!!!" crappy images. Problem is that there are also gems in there and there is no distinction between fertilizer and genuinely inspired photographs.

This leads me to believe that there should be a section dedicated to truly great work with limited feedback and critical evaluation of what should be posted...

For someone who joined only two days ago, you seem to have some pretty strong opinions. How long did you lurk before becoming official? 🤔

Now I am not a good photographer or I am not even know how to take a picture. Yet I do have opinion about others pictures. I don't think anyone is wrong in saying the pictures are bad or they don't like it. Simply it's best not to say so because very likely it would make the people who posted them feel bad.

Unfortunately, the Great Truth Tellers here don't understand the difference between opinion and fact.

I know this as fact 😇

Opinions yes! Strong? Like photographs posted here, it’s all in the eye of the beholder. Sorry if I stepped on your toes. LOL
