To whom?

It means that the retail outlet is authorized to sell Nikon products (in the US) that are purchased through and warranted by NikonUSA Inc. So, NikonUSA is giving authorization to the dealer to sell their products.

NikonUSA Inc. {Melville, NY} is run as an independent company and is a subsidiary of Nikon Corp. {Tokyo, Japan)

But why would an individual need to be one?

If you are asking why an individual has to be an authorized dealer, they don't. Unless of course that individual was a sole proprietor wanting to sell Nikons with NikonUSA support and warranty.

You know Blaire, if we could shut down UHH we might solve the global warming problem.

That would be too drastic. Much better to get rid of the annoying folk who just wouldn't go away, and I don't mean you, as you are too nice for that.

I swear, some of these cantankerous posters fell and sat on their telephoto lenses and neglected to fish them out when they managed to get back up. Hence the reason I usually just lurk.

Yea, but there ARE many helpful people here whose photography is excellent.
One has to try to ignore the cynicists, holier than thou, and those that have all the "correct" guesses, I mean answers.

Even though I have been a Canon and Pentax user for forty years now, and before then Kodak, even I know that being a "Nikon Authorized Dealer" is a big deal.

For one, I never said anything about any camera manufacturer or retailer. Didn't mention anything about "Nikon Authorized Dealer" or anything like that. I was responding about motivation being purchased.
As for my own personal purchases, all my Nikon gear has been purchased from authorized Nikon dealers. A lot of my Canon gear has been purchased from authorized Canon dealers. Even my Sony gear was our based from an authorized Sony retailer. But, I fail to see what any of that has to do with purchasing motivation.

Or could it be, you are a person of few words.

The motivation for a Nikon purchaser is that even I, a Pentax user, know that Nikon is so very aware of where cameras are sold and is so unwilling to look at one if it was sold by an “unapproved” merchant.

Ok, I was not in the least bit talking about warranties and how companies honor their warranties. I wasn't talking about Nikon or any other camera manufacturer. I was questioning how or where one purchases motivation, something I've never ever seen for sale in any store. Why you have dragged Nikons warranty policy into the conversation is beyond me. Maybe you simply chose me to respond to regardless of what the conversation was about. If you are a Pentax used, what do you even care about Nikons warranty policy?! I actually own Nikon gear and I'm not concerned about their warranty policy. All my Nikon cameras and lenses are past their warranty periods. I've never had to send any of my Nikon or Canon or Sony gear in for warranty repairs.
