Even if you're stationed behind the coaches bench or in the huddle This IS THE WAY it's done because of missed blocking assignments and revised running routes even the ball carrier has to take what's given to him and it IS A GUESSING GAME. I don't think you've been there, I have. After processing the film then the choices are made about what best tells the story of the game. Sometimes the coach sends in a play which the QB does not like and he changes it based on the defense he sees. The photographer cannot anticipate anything like this so it is a hit or miss and still a guessing game. The coach told us; "If the play's coming your way get back far and fast as you can or you may be flattened by the ball carrier."

Even if you're stationed behind the coaches bench ... (show quote)

I was talking about prefocusing on a spot and hoping something happens there. Even before today's tracking autofocus, the great sports photographers could follow focus.

You are quite correct, the new cameras with follow focus has changed the rules from olden film day when instant focus was just a wish or a dream. Can you visualize trying to instant focus with a Rolleiflex.

If the play is a sweep coming your way you are not follow focusing but climbing the fence so as to not get run over by a big ball carrier. But you're hoping one of the 4 or 5 shots will print in the Sunday paper. What sport do YOU cover? Every play is 'important' some just get better blocking than others.

This view comes close.

A better question to ask is why an individual strives to do photography?

Agree.

Not sure making money is the key issue. Could be more along the lines of demonstrating expertise in the craft, to consistently be able to produce photographs which show artistic and technical excellence, regardless of equipment or subject.
