My wife and I are going to spend a few days in Key West.I'm trying to decide if I will need to take any lens other than my 16 to 80. I do have 2 powerful zoom lenses but I'm not crazy about carrying all that weight. Do you think I can get by with my 16 to 80 m m? Many thanks for your responses.
There are many opportunities for Pelicans in flight, but they will be fairly close to you whenever you are near the water. You should be able to capture these birds if that interests you, but you would need a 200 mm to get any closeups.
I live near Key West winters - including right now.
The comments above have one glaring omission: BIRDS! There are many species of land and sea birds in the area, and if you go even a tiny distance east of KW, the bridges provide opportunities for many shots of soaring pelicans, turkey vultures, kites, gull, etc. The streets are loaded with colorful chickens (no need for long lens), doves, and a huge variety of song birds.
You will have to make your own judgment call of importance-to-you of bird photos vs weight and build of a long lens.
Make that wt and bulk of long lens. Spell checkers aren’t always helpful.
We spent a few days in funky Key West last Fall and loved it. In addition to other recommendations you’ve received, I suggest you visit the garden maintained by the Key West Garden Club. It’s free with free parking, a rarity in KW. Also go to the Cemetery—look for the tombstone that reads “I told you I was sick.” Take a walk around the city marina. There’s a nice brewery right there on the waterfront for lunch and a beer. And you might end your day with a sunset sail on a catamaran. Enjoy!!!

16 to 80 should be very good.
Exactly. Been there a few times and you will not need more than this lens.

You have been asked this question in various forms and never asked it. I would take a longer lens because i
am interested in birds - I would hate to depend on the preferences of others for something like this,
16-80 will work. Longer lens if you want to photograph birds. Also check out the butterfly museum.

The headstones at the cemetery are wonderful. “Just Resting”. Worth a few hours of walking through.

Sunset Party at Mallory Dock is a must and that lens will do you well.
been there a lot it is crowded and I would not want to lug around that big lens, unless you are going to Smathers beach to take photos of nude bathers !!
I visited Key West and my 16-50 lens on APS-C body was quite sufficient. I got quite a few good shots there. Don't miss the sunset, considered one of the best in Florida.
Just west of the airport, South Roosevelt Blvd.
