To MtnMan: no, unfortunately, the designers for the D5000 swivel screen obviously did not test out all the functions, because once the camera is on a tripod, you cannot view the swivel screen from the front. Makes setting up and being in that group family shot more of a challenge - ha!

Well maybe they came to their senses and thus brought us the D5100.

The other cool thing about the D5100 is that it has infared inputs on both sides. I saw they also did that on the new D3200...whereas the D3100 had none. I actually use the rear one the most...I use the infared release as my remote release whenever I use the camera on a tripod.

PS: I see you can now buy non-Nikon infared remotes for about $5. Cheaper than buying new batteries! I have read that they work fine.

I can't speak for the non-Nikon remotes, but my Nikon remote has been through the washer a few times and still works.

mtman how do you like the nikon d5100 . what features do you like on it? I am considering a nikon 5100 vs a canon 3ti as an upgrade to my canon sx40? any feedback would help?

If you're going for a 5100, (I have a D3100) I would suggest trying for a D7000 if possible, from what I've read.....

d7000 not in my budget. you say you have a d3100 and hint that you would like to upgrade it. what is your opinion of the d3100 both pros and cons?

Well the D3100 is my first DSLR so I'm happy with it. But I haven't had the chance at a 5100 or 7000, just what I read.

yes, that is the remote that was sold to me with the camera. Thanks for the help...it is hard for me as I am 66 y/o and don't pick ups some things like I used to.

What are you youngsters going to do when you get to be my age. If I could find my camera I wouldn't know what it was. I remotely remember trying to find where I left my wife if I have one. Maybe I should try a new remote.

Well at 58 I hardly consider myself a youngster. I can still run at least 60 feet!

I got my D5100 in April and went through the same thing with using the remote.... I called the camera store where I bought the camera and they helped me to figure it out! Using the remote is great...works from both the front and the back because there are sensors both places. The more I use this camera, the more I like it... it's a great camera! Good luck!

I noticed online that the D7000 was listed for $200 less than just a month ago. I know someone on UHH recently mentioned that Nikon was coming out with their new models and that prices were dropping on the old (well, not that old) ones. Keep checking online... I love my D5100 camera... think Nikon cameras are wonderful.
