Now that this thread has cooled down, can anyone help me understand what Sony is doing with cRAW files? They are compressed I understand but why would they still be considered raw and not some type of JPEG?

You'll get better response if you start a new topic. I know with my Canon regular raw is compressed, but lossless. Craw is compressed more but slightly lossy. I've never been able to see any difference between the two. They both open as raw in lightroom with nothing baked in. I bet Sony is similar - just slightly more compression but still raw.

I would be surprised if anyone can demonstrate a visible difference between the quality of compressed raw vs. uncompressed raw.

When I develop my images from raw on my computer I have never seen any evidence that it matters.

I hope folks realize Microsoft does have a downloadable codec for NEF files. I use it so Windows Explorer shows me thumbnails of raw files just as it does for jpg files. I don't need any raw editor to do this. Very handy for a quick look before I begin editing.

Cheers,
Dick

You mentioned a "downloadable codec for NEF files". Can you supply a link for it?
