Since both are charging sales tax no reason not to buy local

I recently made a $400 purchase from Adorama and NO sales tax was charged. Free shipping & great accessories (filters, Corel, Case, etc.) also included. Same deal not available at B & H.

If you buy a taxable item outside Florida and bring it into (or have it delivered into) Florida, and you did not pay sales tax on the item, you owe use tax.

This is likely true in all states that have a sales tax. Years ago I purchased some underwater camera housings from a Canadian company. 6 months later I received a bill from the Maryland Comptrollers office for my unpaid “useage” tax.

Both stores have a well deserved excellent reputation. Lately, however, I've been buying from B&H due to the sales tax issue.
Both stores are now required to collect state sales tax, California in my case. B&H will refund the sales tax on the spot if the customer uses a specific credit card curiously named PayBoo. Adorama doesn't refund the state tax which can add up to a significant amount for a major purchase. It's important to understand that the sales tax IS being paid when you buy from either merchant. My B&H invoice shows the sales tax while the CC slip doesn't.

This is just an observation, comment if you will on the increasing complexities of online trading.

I have used the B & H PayBoo credit card. Just pay the balance in full, and it works great. Big savings for large purchases. Savings on small purchases add up as well. A good deal.

I can't complain all that much. B&H did not seem to work out a sales tax collection plan with California until late. I noticed people in NJ screaming long long before about having to pay sales tax for B&H (NY) purchases. I managed to buy a number of fairly expensive camera and electronic items w/o CA sales tax before they actually did start collecting it from CA customers. I'm used to paying sales tax for CA purchases for Amazon dot com purchases.

Adorama does not charge sales tax. Your information is incorrect.

You are supposed to report the sales tax you don't pay for online purchases at tax time anyway.

The tax IS being paid to the state. B&H is simply discounting from the customer's bill an amount equal to the tax. Nothing at all illegal or unethical about that.

I have ordered from them over the past several months, I live in Pennsylvania and Florida, they ship from outside NY and I do NOT PAY SALES TAX.
OH, sorry, I did not add that I am tax exempt because I run a photo business out of Pennsylvania, that's why I do not pay sales taxes to B&H or Adorama. MY BAD.
I pay sales taxes later on my print and photo card sales.

Adorama is collecting Connecticut sales tax now. I purchased some bag inserts a couple of weeks ago, using points no less, and the sales tax for the purchase showed up on my invoice. I had to pay that in cash not points. Not complaining. They have to do this by law.

Your original statement that Adorama does not charge tax contained no exclusions or conditions. Your statement is incorrect and your insistence does ot make it so.

Of course they charge sales tax, unless the state being shipped to has not set up an arrangement with them yet. That is the responsibility of the state. The seller's responsibility is to pay the tax, whether it gets charged to the customer or not, once the arrangement is made. Otherwise, they would be breaking Federal law in a very obvious manner. I really doubt Adorama is that stupid. Where they ship from is immaterial. So, while you may not have paid sales tax, Adorama most certainly does charge sales tax on shipments to states that have requested it of them.

I have bought from B&H since 2009, and until the new law was introduced, all of my purchases were sales tax free. B&H now charges California sales tax..After all those tax free years, I'm not complaining. B&H has a credit card called PayBoo. I haven't decided on getting that for now. However, Californians were to report an estimate of online sales tax, on their State Income Tax Form. Before the new law began.

Why are you distinguishing between online and brick and mortar stores? Would you walk into your local camera store, where you have done business for years, and ask them to eat the sales tax? Good luck with that. When you charge a B&H purchase to a Payboo credit card, owned by B&H, they are counting on people to not pay the balance by the due date. The high monthly interest rate applied to the balance more than makes up for the sales tax which is being “eaten” by B&H.

The payboo card is owned and issued by Synchrony Bank, not B&H. However, the card is only accepted by B&H.
