Now I have gone and tried something completely different. Clarity slider way down with a modification in split toning that brought out the blues. Then some detail sharpening in the lightness channel in lab color to keep it soft. Didn't expect to spend so much time re editing this photo today.

An interesting "best of both worlds" sort of edit. Soft and misty but at the same time not flat grey, not flat lighting and not devoid of detail.

Looking for votes?
Mine is for the color version. Hands down, it seems to me to be the most “faithful to nature”. The other appear “cooked”.

And by the bye, I did most of my growing up in Springdale, attended Stamford Highschool, and in ‘66 we we’re living in New Canaan (on Cherry Lane) and our first son was the first baby of the year born in the Norwalk Hospital in 1966.

Cheers, from a distant part of this small world.....

You have made reference to split toning before and am just now becoming familiar with it. It seems to be a very powerful and unique tool.

It is a small world isn’t it! The reason I never considered this or any of these images for b/w before today is because it didn’t really make a grain of sense, but I do like to try unlikely things. Working in black and white sort of transforms an image into more of a composition to be manipulated as I would in art work. As a kid I rebelled against doing homework by dipping tooth picks in ink and experimenting with the textures that resulted as they skittered across the paper. I had piles of them. They can certainly be described as over cooked by photoghapic standards, but they are a way to return to my roots. Thanks so much for your input. Mark

Thanks Linda. Just very recently I have been experimenting with declarification, and am really enjoying some of the results.

I think that no matter what you do to it, it is a fantastic exhibit of form and light. In many ways, the best of the best.

I like both your products. The color version ahas an ethereal look to it, while the black and white is harsher and therefore more matter-of-fact.

I'm like you Matt. I like the different looks for different reasons. Every look has a different intent.

First of all, I think this is a beautiful image. I love the capture of light rays and find it difficult to do. At first glance, I liked the second on best. But I also like the others. I guess my thoughts would be that it's nice to have several versions of the same view. That's no help, is it?

I think what you said follows what a number of the others are saying. Besides, I didn't think of this as a "vote for your favorite" as much as a reaction to the various ways it can be interpreted. I really appreciate your comments. The rays were so prominent that they endure pretty vigorous processing irregardless of the direction you go. I wouldn't want to have to pick a favorite and stand by it, because I will no doubt go back to it and see what else might be in there.

The original picture looked wonderful. A foggy scene with sun beams. Fog is difficult to capture as it does not look as dense to my camera as it does to me. The second, where you added color to the sun looked unnatural for a foggy scene and my mind was not comfortable with it. The black and white was way to dark a mood and some of the details were missing. So IMHO its number one.

I have seldom worked successfully with foggy images and I won't try this time. I think the B&W image is the jewel of this set.
