Whoops, my fading memory supplied "print" when it should have supplied "scan". The program is VueScan and I used it happily for a few years, unlike many others who had to deal directly with Hamrick, VueScan's creator. As one wag put it, "Hamrick makes the Soup Nazi look like Mother Teresa!" (I'm sure many of you remember "NO SOUP FOR YOU!!" from Seinfeld. Unfortunately for the banned customer, it was d^mn good soup!)

PS Years ago, I had hundreds of B/W 35mm negs that I wanted to scan. VueScan did the job for me but I never dealt directly with Hamrick since apparently unlike many others, I was able to read, understand and apply the simple/straightforward directions. Of course, my college career was a 10 year jaunt through two universities, one in the Big 10 and one in the Ivy League. :-) That may be what you need to successfully run VueScan? <g>

I had downloaded the manual and read it completely a few months ago. I will do so again and try the trial version to see if I can find any improvements over printing from Lightroom. And at $70 it is not expensive if it is an improvement over Lightroom's results.

Could you say more about Qimage, please? Does it produce prints that are better than the printer I use? I have an Epson 3800.

Use Canon's printer application. It is superior to most applications when using a Canon.

Just google Qimage (or Qimage One if you have a Mac), and read the description which will do the software far more justice than I can. Qimage will dramatically improve the quality of your Epson 3800, and is far more flexible than the Canon software.

Meanwhile, I have been using Canon printers for many years, the largest being a Pro9000. I find the Canon software very intuitive and easy to use. My only beef with printing issues in general is not being able to control colour balance within the actual printer settings. If anyone knows what I am missing, please let me know. My screen calibration always seems fine, but the coloration of my prints sometimes takes on a slightly different hue.
