Hello. I'm traveling with some friends to Puerto Plata, Dominican republic, in March. I can't stand the idea of going without my Nikon 7200. I've heard I should leave my camera at home. Does anyone have any experience going there? I hope to travel a bit off the resort to see whatever there is to see.
If you have any good ideas for photo ops I'd also appreciate that!
I do plan to take my little waterproof Olympus.
I have traveled extensively throughout the DR, going back to 1983, without incident. Exercise reasonable care, as you would anywhere else and you will not have a problem. That area is a good jumping-off place for some of the most beautiful, scenic places you can imagine. Try to get to Santiago, and Mocha, in the mountains a bit south where they grow their (excellent) coffee, Las Terrenes over in the Samana to the east where you will find high waterfalls, fantastic beach scenes and mountains tumbling to the edge of the sea, and March will be the tail-end of the worlds largest migration of Right whales in the Bay of Samana. The north coast itself has Cabarete, windsurfing capital of the world, and more rugged coast line west to the border with Haiti (do NOT go to Haiti unescorted; better yet, do not go, period) Dominican Republic is much more than just beaches, and the people and culture are wonderful. I am going there myself in a week or so. Enjoy yourself, exercise reasonable care, i.e. do not go anywhere alone, and book tours/travel through your hotel, if possible, or known, recognized entities. No "street guides". Take your Nikon (I am, 2 in fact a D300 and my F2A,) and use good judgement, but get out there; you will be rewarded.
