Hello. I'm traveling with some friends to Puerto Plata, Dominican republic, in March. I can't stand the idea of going without my Nikon 7200. I've heard I should leave my camera at home. Does anyone have any experience going there? I hope to travel a bit off the resort to see whatever there is to see.
If you have any good ideas for photo ops I'd also appreciate that!
I do plan to take my little waterproof Olympus.

Why would you leave your camera at home? If it's because crime is that bad I would go somewhere else.

Been there, done that. Great place for you and your D7200 to visit. No problems.

I'm an US expat living in the DR. The reports you hear are WAAAAY overblown. Like any other place, like NYC, LA, Paris and London, there is crime, but no more than anywhere else. Enjoy your trip, get off the resort and see the country and meet wonderful people here. Just stay alert. Try a traditional Dominican breakfast with mangu, fried salami and eggs. You'll love it!

Check out (probably misspelled) Altos de Chavon, an artists village.

Just don’t go off-campus. Been there done that. Not a great idea, or just don’t take expensive gear off base.....RJM

Our daughter's destination wedding was in Punta Cana DR in October. It was just perfect. I hired Manny to take me on a morning shoot for birds. He picked me up at the resort and we had a great morning. He has a nice van and speaks perfect English. There is an album on Flikr page from my time there. I am sure he would put together some tours for you. www.exploraecotour.com

What you hear has been way over-blown. Normal safety precautions when carrying any type of gear apply and is adequate. People are friendly and very nice to tourists...wish I could say that for all parts of the world. Enjoy your trip!

Be ware of the vultures at Lifestyle holidays vacation club. They will ply you with liquor and sell you a "Villa" which you will have a difficult time booking for your vacation.

First, replace the strap with a non-descript strap, so you don't advertise the brand. You may also use a shoulder strap. Be careful if you want a stranger to take your picture.

I have been there a couple of times with several cameras each time. On and off the resort, I have never had a problem. You could have a problem anywhere, so you need to be careful of where you're going and what neighborhood you're in. But for the most part, I found the country to be extremely easy going and without dramatic criminal threats.

I have traveled to 3rd world countries for 12 years. Always carried my Canon G12 in my pocket. It did just as well as my large 80D, except without the capability of changing lens...which I sorely missed.
A personal opinion, you should not have a visible camera hanging around your neck if you are going into the places I have gone. If you are in the tourist areas or resorts, just be aware of your surroundings. If you go off the beaten track, carry something small in your pocket. A word to the wise!
