Based strictly on media reports, I'm suspicious of this being the Kobe Bryant crash. First of all, heavy fog was reported in the area, where none is seen here. And, the terrain in the video doesn't appear much like the crash site shown in the news. Right or wrong, the crash is horribly tragic and underscores the dramatically heightened risk of helicopter travel. A risk rarely explained, if ever, to an innocent passenger. As a retired, aviation professional, my position has always been to never set foot in one.

I just spoke with the N.T.S.B. They said they were familiar with the video, that it was 4 years old, and shot in Afghanistan. I heard English spoken on the video, so .... dubbed maybe. Chopper 'appears' to be Red & white, hard to tell. It appears Kobe's was Blue & White. Both are Saddening disasters. I've been up in both fixed wing & rotary craft. To me, Choppers are like the Motorcycles of the Sky; Tough to walk away from an accident in/on either one. I would have gone IFR all the way after liftoff in the conditions described by witnesses. two aspects stand out:

1. the pilot was not on an IFR Flt plan. He was SVFR in very bad conditions. Very odd choice, and likely a poor choice.
2. reports hint at a mechanical malfunction, causing loss of control. Not CFIT.

It is idiotic to blame Kobe. He was not PIC, nor qualified to judge WX, or IFR vs SVFR.

Those of you who don't recognize my lingo probably are profoundly clueless. Be satisfied to grieve, and don't second-guess Kobe not second-guessing an experienced pilot.

Well you sure showed us rubes how smart you are. Easier to say pilot error. When LAPD grounds their helos it's probably a good idea to ground your civilian helo that's only going to a kid's basketball game, not saving someone's life.
