Does that mean my computer will no longer work?
Am I now forced to buy a 10 computer?
My Avast will no longer protect me?

1. No
2. No
3. Maybe
Windows 7 will no longer be supported by Microsoft. What does that mean to you? Well, you can still use it, and it will probably work with most of your current applications for years to come. But there will be no more security patches, which may leave your computer vulnerable to exploits, malware, virii.
As far as the anti-virus. The company will still provide new signatures to your current software, but Avast may elect to stop supporting Windows 7 versions of their software at some point. There are probably still enough Windows 7 computers using their software to keep supporting it for the near future, but it's up to them.
I would update to Windows 10, as it is probably equally as acceptable to Windows 7. Plus the added bonus of updated security.

You can still upgrade your current computer to Windows 10 for free. It involves several steps including downloading the software and creating the media before doing it. This article is long and has too much discussion, but as you scroll down, you'll get to the way to do it. I just upgraded a machine, and I did not have to enter a product key. It worked fine. There is some chance that if your machine is more than 3-4 years old there may be some compatibility issues. Mine is 7 years old, and I had none.

Your computer will continue to work as it is now,
MS will no longer supply bug fixes or program updates.
Not if you don't want to. When they stopped support for XP,
I continued to use XP until the computer had to be replaced.
They should, for a while at least. I would imagine that they would make the virus detection/removal software backward compatible. I'm using Norton.
I remember trying to install on my XP. it was a fiasco. Purchased a 7.
Hopefully it shall be easier on the 7.
I wonder if my nikon scanner will work on 10.
Thank you for helpful info.

If not with the supplied Nikon software, Vuescan should make it work again. It has drivers for many legacy devices.

I upgraded on 31 Dec. It was easy. I immediately downloaded the Classic Shell to make the PC look like Windows 7. I don't like some things about Windows 10. I'm still trying to get it set up "MY WAY".

If Nikon scanner does not work, try Vuescan.

Too late, this was years ago. I got a new small 8-1/2x11 scanner that is powered by the USB cable and can travel with the laptop if needed.

It will work, but there will be no updates or support. Of course, any online help that existed before will still be available - articles and Q&A forums.
You can buy Win 10 for about $100. If your computer is old enough, you may feel justified in buying a new one.
Antivirus programs don't care if an OS is supported.

I have a scanner that started out on my 7 and seamlessly went to 10 with no issues.
