The easiest is to purchase the battery from a reliable source, such as B and H or Adorama.

Why does it matter if it works fine?

How to tell? Just check the price. If it costs a small fortune, it's probably a Nikon.

If you are trying to identified a Nikon battery; all I have seen have a Nikon hologram on them. If purchasing Nikon batteries they are not generally discounted, most after market replacements or less expensive and usually say replacement for Nikon (model number ) if reputable dealer.

Safety features may not be on the counterfeits which can damage your camera or cause personal injury

BnH recently sold counterfeit batteries and when they found out they replaced them

Here's why I think it matters. If one uses an off-brand battery and has the misfortune of the battery damaging the camera, all bets are off in having the camera repaired at no or low cost to the owner.

The less thoughtful could reply, how would the camera company know? Easy, please send the battery and camera for us to examine.

Third-party batteries are fine, for the first 6 months or so. Then they stop holding charge while not in use, and die early in cold conditions. Not worth it.

We're talking about counterfeit batteries, which will have Nikon printed on them. Legitimate third party batteries will have their own brand on them. We have to assume the OP is not talking about batteries with another brand printed on them.

No are you?...Maybe i'm missing something here. People are always on their own when buying third party batteries, the same goes for lens. I have two Nikon DSLR's and one advanced point & shoot, all three have Nikon written on the batteries.
